Conventional wisdom says that you should not record in any room less than 1500 cubic feet. As the BBC puts it "Any studio of less thn 1500 cubic feet is not practical. Any saving in construction cost is outweighed by cost of correcting acoustical deficiencies... and usually successful correction of deficiencies is not feasible". The BBC aside and all the acoustical problems.... the only thing that EVER sounded good that I recorded in a small room was guitar. I've recorded vocals, bass, drums in rooms smaller than 1500 cubic feet. It's always more of a battle to get them sounding decent. Most people who do this as a hobby don't have that kind of space for an iso-booth. When you are limited for space you just have to make it as big as you can and deal with it. People have made it work with smaller rooms... I just think you have to be more aware of what's going on acoustically to come out with a good sounding recording in a small room.... or you just plain get lucky.

I would record in the open room. At this point don't be overly concerned with an iso booth.
