16 bit or 24 bit

Hi all, these boards are the best, the people on here are awsome.

Anyway, enough sucking up. Well I currently have $500 saved up and I am going to barge into sam ash and put it down on a recorder. The thing is the one I am getting is 16 bit, Yamaha AW-16. The recorder is good though, alot of features. I recently looked up the Tascam 2488 and I see it has 24 tracks at 24-bit for only $200 more. I have used 16 bit and 24 bit on my fostex mr-8 and to my ears it makes a difference, also using effects on 16 bit kills the sound. Should I go the extra $200 , or is 16 bit good enough, I wont be using a computer so I cant change the quality. I will be recording rockabilly/rock most of the time, Doubling up on guitar parts and micing the whole drum kit seperate.

Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully help out,

Tom

Hi, thanks for the kind words. I would go for the extra $200. Right now 16 bit is CD standard, but yes, effects processing kinda bastardizes that 16 bits. 24 bit is the upcoming standard for hi-res audio such as DVD audio, it's best to be ready for it.

Have you considered spending that money on a sound card for your PC instead?

Im not a computer guy, I really dont know a thing about sound cards and I havent bothered to look it up. On the Yamaha website though it says that the AW 16 can be used as a control panel for cubase. I've seen a friend use cubase before and it looks pretty complicated, but im sure if I sat down for a while I could get it.

I understand that the computer gives ALOT more, and that the programs are fantastic, its what all studios have, but I guess Im just hardheaded and rather do external recording and pick up on computers when I go to college.

Im 16 right now and I am fascinated with recording ,I want to learn so much and make a living off of it. What I've been doing is charging the neighborhood kids for demos, I've done 2 bands so far. All I've used is my Fostex MR-8 and a cheap computer program that just puts the Left and Right mixed down tracks together. Thats the experience Im getting so far. WOW sorry for blabbing, just lost it there for a minute or five,

so the short answer is nope havent considered a soundcard. After I get the recorder out Im going to get a pair of monitors, a pre amp, and mics.

Well, the AW16 has gotten great reviews from the ones I have read, and it appears to be a good product. However, be aware that you will be recording on a computer, meaning, it's still all digital, whether the AW16 or a PC. PC's will give you a lot more in the way of user friendliness.

Recording on a PC can seem daunting at first, but if you have the means, I personally recommend it for a number of reasons which I won't get into here.

So, to just answer your question, go for the 24 bit.
