Proper Way To Connect A Compressor To OmniStudio

Posted on

Member Since: Oct 28, 2004

I've got an OmniStudio USB. Everything I've read here strongly suggests getting a hardware compressor, which I intend to do. My superior powers of deductive logic tell me I should plug the mic into the compressor and the compressor into the sound box.

However, the instructions that came with the sound box show the mic plugged into the XLR in and the compressor plugged into an "insert" jack.

Is that the best (or only) way to do it, and if so what jack on the compressor would I use?

Sorry for such a basic question, but I really don't know what I'm doing.

Yeah, compressors should be in an insert or aux loop, not right inline between the mic and Omni like many peeps think...

dB, all I have is the Delta44, a comp on the way and a pre-amp (Audio Buddy).

Followin the above, how would I rig that up then??

Would it be the MIC >> COMP >> AUDIO BUDDY >> DELTA44 ?? If not, Im screwed since thats all I has!!

Cheers bud

I have a cheap Behringer mixer MX 602A that I use when my Mackie is gigging. It doesn't have inserts, but it does have one aux loop. Not the premium arrangement for a compressor, but it works. Perhaps Santa could spring $50 for a small mixer?

So...if I dont get a mixer (tho I am thinking of getting one soon I would admit) - can I just plug the MIC to the Compressor and the comp into the Preamp?

Cheers...

It seems like that would work...but i've seen posts from people a lot smarter than me that clam that it isn't a good idea.

OK:

MIC > COMP > PRE > Sound Card

Is done, often, but is NOT the way it's supposed to be done, tho admittedly, I have done it myself a lot. A compressor should be in an insert or aux loop. Many preamps have effects loops on them as well, if yours does, you should use it.

Cheers dB.

I think the Audio Buddy has nae loops - just basic pre-amp (tho its a nice pre I admit).

I am now seriously considering getting a small mixer (maybe a Behringer or a Yamaha) or something.

I've just snared me a nice 12u rack case and I have the Behringer Composer Pro 2600 to put in it! So, I am looking to get this set up right. I also proquired (also for "Xmas" :-) a Behringer B1....Santa may be able to snare me a mixer tho I cant be overly expensive and I only record myself so no real need for any great amount of ins.

What I do need is something I can use to get a good sound i.e. pre's equalt to or better than the M-Audio Audio Buddy with the stuff you mention above (the loops) for my rack gear which I plan on expanding on whenever the wife isnt looking/cash is availble :-D !!

Cheers dB

Aye, do yea know that many Behringer mixers come with optional rack ears to screw on the sides so their mixers can be rack mounted? Might be something tea thing aboot. And even their smallest mixers have at least one loop, my 1622 has two, plus some built in effects that are decent. And it's only $200 USD or so...tho the 1204 is cheaper.

Niceee...I likes the sound of that.

So, lemme get this straight - it should have fx send/returns aye ? Not the same as aux send/returns?

OK...I'll be a plunderin the ebay later and see what's there. I almost snared a massive desk for just £50 (Im talking 16 ins - a big old Behringer...looked the business) but alas, lost it for £1 !! GRRRRR...

I had seen a few Behri mixers with that you speak off - now, that would be super cool. Stick the mixer at the top of the rack ... excellent. I'll check that oot to.

Good man dB.

How bout this one then dB??

Behringer UB1202 Mixer

Behringer's newest 12-input, 2-bus mic/line mixer boasts 4 state-of-the-art INVISIBLE MIC PREAMPs (IMPs) and an effective, extremely musical 3-band EQ plus switchable low-cut filter on all mono channels. There is also 1 post fader FX send per channel for external FX devices, main mix outputs plus separate control room, headphones and stereo tape outputs. Tape inputs are assignable to main mix or control room/phones outputs. Like the smaller UB1002, the UB1202 is an extremely versatile mixer.

That would do the job huh (also for the rackmount gear i.e. compressor?). Costs £60 ($120). No FX but I guess Im plannin on fillin the rack with them anyway...

Cheers

Well...here is my issue with that mixer...

If you are going to buy one that is 12 or more channels, I'd make sure it has at least one set of sub-bus outs for isolating tracks while recording. You may not know, understand or care why, but, I will tell you, considering your aspirations as I understand them, if you try to save $30 by sacrificing sub outs, you will kick yourself in the *** later for doing it.

Fair point dB - I think I see yer point here and from my own knowledge, I take it the lack of these subgroups would not allow mixing/monitoring to be done at the same time?

How about this puppy?

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISA...bayphotohosting

Looks nice..my main concern is good preamps and availability of inserts for my rack stuff (now have the compressor and the virtualiser on its way!!).

So...with the exception of the broken fader, whadya think (do yi think this it'd be rack mountable??).

Cheers

Its on the audio buddy - I just wanted a mixer for the inserts etc.

I thinks I could by without one but it would be handy to have all the settings there for each thing I use i.e. guitars, mics, etc - then I just plug em in.

Thanks for the input Presley...

And coco, you should really run it in this order. Mic-Pre-comp. Because running the pre after the comp could negate the compressor effect.
