Help with volume level in Adobe Audition 1.5

Ok here's the scoop. I had Cool edit Pro 2000, on my laptop and on my desktop. Used it on both of them and never had any difference in the operation or use of either. Recently, I have upgraded to Adobe Audition 1.5. I installed it on both my laptop and my desktop. All of the settings are still in the factory default and are the same on both systems... HOWEVER! When i record on the desktop, a weird thing is happening with the volume level: It starts out low and gradually increases to a steady level. So the end effect is everytime I'm recording vocals, the sound is low then gets loud which is totally unacceptable. On my laptop, the sound is steady the whole way through which is the way it should be. You can even see the difference in the wave forms on the desktop recorded version and the laptop ones. I used a standard tone on my keyboard to record the same 20 second burst of audio on both using the same mic setup, but again the desktop starts out low and then peaks. What the crimmey is up here. I really need to use my desktop, cause my laptop is limited with drive space and memory. Any info here would be mucho apperciado! Thanks R-

I am not an Audition user, but I think know there are several here who use it. They should see this post and hopefully can give ya some insight.

As a little thing to check, you might want to see if there is any automation drawn in the volume envelope. I doubt that is the problem, but it sounds as if it is automating a fade in.

I use Audition 1.5.
Have you tried recording with something else first, like the windows Sound Recorder and see if it also does the same on that?

Ok, yes. I tried recording with windows Sound Recorder, and it is in fact doing the same thing. This is weird. I never noticed this before. Maybe it wasnt as prevelant in cool edit 2000. Maybe the difference lies in the sound cards. Anyone reccomend a good sound card that wont do this?

Maybe it wasn't doing it before, sometimes things just happen when you install new software.

You could try and install your sound drivers again or find an update and see if that helps.

It all depends on what you plan to do with it? how many inputs/outputs you need.

Have a search through some topics on this site, there's some very helpful stuff to read on here, all you need to know.

Hey do you think getting a compressor/limiter would solve this issue? I scoped a few on musicians friend, found this one:

service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Its in my price range, but I don't no jack about brand name quality/usabilty etc etc. Thanks for the info Murphy!

If you just want an easy fix then try using the
Adobe Audition, compressor and Normalizer, found in the Amplitude effects section.
This will Level out the wave file if you mess around with it.
I'd go for another soundcard first.

Yeah i considered that. Will give it a try, but I would prefer it worked like it does in my laptop. Thats just one more step in a million of others I have to do for every song I record. Looked into the m audio sound cards. Gonna pick one up when I have some extra loot!

Duuuuuuuude, So i reinstalled audition, and its works fine now. Yeah yeah I should have done that to start with. I sat up one night and went through every setting on both the laptop and the desktop and they were identical. Im thinking maybe i missed something, or maybe i toggled some function that I'm not aware of yet, perhaps with a hot key or something. Thanks for the input, much appreciated!
