midi capabilities

i'm at a pretty exciting point in my recording journey. I've had a nice full 88 weighted keyboard at my disposal for years now but it has just left my studio (frown). The keyboard was lent to me and i can't afford a $2,000 keyboard like that one. So i'm looking at my options.

Before i buy i need to learn some things about midi. SPecifically, if i buy a midi keyboard (specificall the M-Audio Evolution MK-449C MIDI keyboard), will i have the capability to simply record myself playing piano in sonar like an audio track (but as a midi track). Or do i need to buy a keyboard that has analog outs so i can run it into the analog ins in my delta 1010?

thanks all!!

yo!

if ya buy a midi keyboard it will allow you to play something in an app, such as sonar, and assign whatever instrument to it you like. so yeah, itll save as a midi track.

some keyboards mke noise AND transmit midi, so you could record from the output to get the sound of the 'board OR record the midi notes instead.

hope this helps!

Well, the MK-449 is really just a midi controler. Meaning you need a synth of some type to make sounds, as it has none of its own. That said, Sonar does have software synths depending on which version you have. Sonar 3 and 4 have a virtual sampler that is great for that sort of thing. There are aslo severl software piano's out there as well.
