haha walt

if no one gets the jaques derrida thing, i shall have to explain, so as not to appear hebephrenic.

derrida was the father of "deconstructionism" which is a way of analyzing texts (literature, mostly). in deconstructionism, "words" don't really have any objective "meaning" anymore, because, derrida claims, throughout their "historical lifetimes," they've accumulated multiple "layers of meaning." through the lens of a deconstructionist, an author is not considered to be the sole author of the meaning of his text; instead, the historical connotations encoded there, subconsciously or not, are.

consequently, in a deconstructionist analysis, you see people using quotation marks a lot, to signify that they're only going to treat a word using its "common definition" just "for the purpose of discussion." just scanning one of these scholarly papers you can get the impression that everyone is just being very "sarcastic" with all these quotation marks...

at lesast, that's what i "gather."

consquently the news story:

Jacques Derrida "dies."

it's ok you dont have to laugh. it cracked me up every time i thought of it yesterday though. i tried to explain it to my friend at a bar last night and it took 5 minutes to get partway through the definition then we got separated by drunks while she was buying shots and i was hollering over them trying to finish the set up. at that point i realized this is the most difficult, unrewarding joke to tell in the world. and its only 3 words long.

Aye...that seems fair enough Forty.

For some "reason" it makes little sense to this dude but then thats just "me" ! hehehe.

I see the logic tho. Seriosuly, tho it does seem like an odd thing to be analysing - sodd being a "deconstructionist" - think you'd get a lot of sare "heids aka heads" doing that!

Coco.

Personally, I love the Onion.

One of the best headlines I ever saw there was "John Kerry's face droops with joy at the last polls" :-D

i saw that one; that was great!

another great sidebar item was one where slobodan milosevich was insulting the tribunals by eating a large samdwich in court. it was a photo, and there's no way to describe how perfect it was.
