Radiohead. Their last four studio albums are great. They keep getting better and they're all in their 30's.
Who do you think is the best band currently recording music? Pearl Jam, Metallica, Phish(they just recorded), Johnny Lang, Black Eyed Peas, The Webb Brothers ("local" chicago band I'm very fond of), Flaming Lips? They are just a few of the bands I thought of, but Radiohead tops the list as far as I'm concerned.

I always think "who is the best, what is the best" kind of questions are silly, cuz there isn't really an answer, there is no "best"...in my opinion at least, there is good and bad, better and worse...but no worst and best.

In my humble opinion...

Well then dB, why did you comment on the "best" album ever produced then? Huh? HUH? Ya, that's what I thought! Everyone has their own favorites, and I'm just curious. You know when people say the greatest bands EVER they usually say the beatles, led zeppelin or some band that is no longer in existence. So I guess it's fun to hear what people who actually know stuff about music think about current bands or recording artists. Just play along will ya?

You will also notice when I responded to the best album ever produced it was a collection, not singling anything else. I did play along with that one, and actually shouldn't have, but I was in the mood at the time.

We get crap like that here all the time...what's the best CPU, what's the best recording app, what's the best sound card, what's the best this, that and the other...and they are unanswerable, and kind of immature, questions, really, don't ya think?

Hey Guys

That wee thread I started aboot best production on an album / best produced album was for my own needs really.

I plan to check oot some of these albums and hoped to guage who the "general" top producers are. I have my own favs but I wanted to know if there was strong consensus towards a great producer, I planned on tryin to get some tips.

However, I think it got muddled along the way and folks started talkin aboot their fav albums..I was purely lookin from production point of view.

Still..all debate is good - its good to talk!

Anyways...canny say I am overlly inspired by ANY music just now (new anyway) Thats why I make my ain (conceited wee joke everyone - that WAS a joke!) hehehehe

I don't think it's immature. I didn't ask who's the coolest or who's the hottest musician. I'm talking about merit in terms of musicianship and albums produced. Radiohead and Nigel Goodrich are a great combo and I'm curious what others might think of different bands. Lighten up dB, it's the "talkin' smack" forum.

I will back out of this thread before I get pissed off...oops, too late.

What really gets me is the fact that my reply that there is no "best" is somehow not a viable answer...well, that and being told how to behave in my own ****** forum.

Oh gee, here I am compeled to comment. I hates it when I gets me in twouboe. I'll twist this thread to my way of thinking and really prove I'm nuts. I appreciate clarity and presence. Just like I am inspired by Christian McBride as a bassist, I am also by the production Richard Seidel and Don Sickler did on Christian's album gettin' to it. I also have to say that a friend brought over a Slayer album the other day and I was also impressed, although I don't particulary care for the music. Now, here I am in trouble again, neither of these albums are probably real current. Current is something I just don't pay much attention to.

i agree with both of ya! i love these types of questions because you get to talk about your favorite bands. that's really what these questions are for, not to prove a best or worst band, cause that is unprovable. but then the problem with these threads is that sometimes someone will come back and say "ew you like (so and so)? they're worse than my grandma!" and then it starts a real fight, becuse that's what opinion questions sometimes do.

radiohead. except, for my tastes they peaked with the bends and ok computer. this last one is the best of the lot of the newer electronic ones, i thought, but there's always one or two great songs on each album. like 'everything in its right place' and on this one 'there there' and 'sail to the moon.' hail to the thief is the only one of the electronic ones that i can listen to straight through and enjoy.

Well OK then. No One in my opinion has made a decent album since Frank Zappa did the Original Joes Garage album. Or maybe it was Deep Purple Made in Japan which captured the live performance of the then great areana rock band.

But you get my point, as dB said, there aint no best or worste. I can listen to horrible crap and find something good in it. We all have differant tastes and listening habits, and that is what makes making music so much fun. The day I cant listen to a Slipknot album and then turn up Maddona is the day I will have to call it quits and let em put me in a home. I dont care who or what it is, I will at least listen and enjoy what I can of it. Whether its the quietist classical or the raunchiest ICP album, its all good to somebody for some reason.

End of Rant.

The easy way to think about it is this way:

"my band is the best band in the universe".

That way, everyone wins! :D

It's very interesting to read about all of the different bands that you folks listen to. I must admit that I am not familiar with very many of them. I guess I'm out of touch ... (or else I'm an old fart!)

Like others have stated, I don't listen to very much new music. However, these are my favorite albums from the past year or two:

"Rainy Day Music" - by the Jayhawks
"The Thorns" - by The Thorns
"Get Born" - by Jet
"Welcome Interstate Managers" - by Fountains of Wayne
"Still In The Band" - by The Cutaways (Oh, wait, that's MY band!)

I hope that this list isn't grounds for removal from HRC! :-)

Then, of course, there are the handful of country music artists that are putting out good music, but I won't bore you with their names.

well, it certainly isn't franz ferdinand...like the mercury awards suggested... i can't believe it won out over TY and the streets, let alone the old jazzer whose name currently escapes me.

for me it's king crimson. or the cardiacs.

they've been around a long time and keep consistently putting out cracking albums....

and i don't like radiohead, so i can' vote for them!

Na your not an old fart jim. If ya were then youd recognize Zappa or Deep Purple. They are from the 60's and 70's.

And ay, pixel, I forgot you were into King Crimson and Cardiacs and Fripp.

Sometimes over the edge but always listenable.

Have you ever listened to anything by Fripp and Eno?

Evening Starr is one of my faves!!!

You can drift off to la la land with that one in headphones.

yes flame...ty. i take it you're thinking it wasn't a worthy choice?

i really rate his albums. he has a very particular mc style, is intelligent, brings a lot of african rythms and music to his beats as well. his rhymes are also intelligent, not at all gangster, more like beatnik poetry crossed with reggae righteousness!

well, i think so anyway! ;)

Zappa? Deep Purple? Of course I recognize them. I wore out my copies of "Joe's Garage" and "Machine Head" (on vinyl, by the way.)

I'm just not familiar with bands like Radiohead or Fripp. (Probably I should be!) Whenever I look at a copy of "Guitar One" magazine, I seldom recognize more than one of the songs being transcribed! Yeah, I'm n old fart. Perhaps I need to expand my horizons!?!?!
