Hey, where did everyone buy their domain name from that has one? I'm about to buy one and there are so many companies out there now that I was wondering which company you peeps have dealt with.

Aug 12, 2004 12:38 pm Im in the UK so I use Supanames.co.uk - they're cheap and gid.
I have all my domains and web hosting with them.
They do .com's too - in fact they do them all...
I do some web design and use them for everyhing I do.
Coco.
Aug 12, 2004 12:41 pm netsol.com for most, they are expensive but I like their setup.
namecheap.com is a good, cheap one that I use for www.recordingdirectory.com

Aug 12, 2004 02:19 pm I've used whois-register.com. They're 8.95 a year, and give you all sorts of changeable stuff for free, that other companies charge for. they give you a few emails so you can have your name @ your domainname.com. I've done 4 already without a problem (except for my own).
www.whois-register.com
The free thing that was worth it for me was that I could forward (point) my domain name to another site, or park it, or have it point to the actual site. These options are free and included vs. extra cost.
Aug 12, 2004 02:21 pm More than where you register, the more careful consideration should be where you HOST the web site.
HostPC.com can register your domain and host your space, for great prices and with great service.

hostpc.com: one of the best hosting packages you'll find
Aug 12, 2004 05:35 pm doteasy.com
Free hosting (it's good too) and the domain isn't too expensive.
Aug 15, 2004 12:15 pm The Cutaways are hosted at:
icdsoft.com
We got the domain name, hosting, 333MB storage, 5GB bandwidth, unlimited web-based e-mail, and more for 5 bucks per month (had to pay for a whole year in advance).
www.thecutaways.us is our website...it seems to be pretty fast loading and everything.
So far, we're very pleased.

Jul 07, 2005 09:47 pm Hey dB,
I'm about to buy a domain and also have hostPC host our site. How do I go about making sure you get commission or such (if you do) from HostPC?

Jul 07, 2005 09:52 pm oop, i didn't think of that, though Joe knows I got the lead from here, so i'm sure it's good.
I'm moving our companies to hostpc from a few other places. It's not been pretty to administer the sites with 3 different ones floating around. I already have my site and my two sister's sites on hostpc, been happy so far.
Jul 07, 2005 09:53 pm Just tell 'em Dan sent ya, he'll know. I don't get commission or anything, Joe and I are buddies, he runs a superb business so I refer people to him and he is very cool with me when I need it :-)
Quality choice using HostPC though, I will say that!
I wish he had .Net servers, cuz I need one of those right now for a client...but he doesn't, and I don't blame him.
Jul 07, 2005 09:55 pm Yeah, pjk, Joe hit me up on IRC a couple days ago and said "hey, pjk is on the phone"...I knew there couldn't be many pjk's :-)

Jul 08, 2005 07:39 am Yeah, I dropped your name, and he said ' I got Dan on chat right now '.
World's getting smaller every day.
Jul 08, 2005 07:45 am Joe and I typically chat the day away when we have time...between Joe and flame it's a wonder I get any work done at all...
I will say this, you are doing the right thing (as you know as well) Having one login to get into all your sites control panels, all your sites on the same type of server is nice...having to learn to deal with the differences between multiple servers is a pain in the butt. Right now I am spread across 2 companies, 3 servers, but they are all DirectAdmin servers, and very close in configuration.
When I get off my lazy butt I should be at one company, two servers...as HRC is always babied a little more than my other sites :-) Preferential treatment...democrats would call it discrimination and sue me I suppose :-D

Jul 08, 2005 10:32 am Sweet! Just bought my domain name and the $29.99 hosting per year. How long does it normally take before you can start putting your site up?
Jul 08, 2005 10:36 am not long, depends on his backlog work or any out of the ordinary server issues...hard to say exactly.
Welcome to HostPC :-)

Jul 08, 2005 10:47 am you got that right. there's a cold fusion site (haven't even touched that one), the site I've been working on, and a third site in europe that I've updated a little bit, but not much as it's been written by some other company.
Plus, on top of this, there's two companies taking money every quarter for hosting, plus netsol taking 40$ a year for domain names, plus small locals taking 2$ per month for emails. I'm gathering we're paying over 500$ a year for internet presence. And that's not including what europe pays for their hosting, reg, and emails.
I'll be one happy camper when this all gets corralled into one comfy little spot.
Jul 08, 2005 10:51 am Jeezuz, you guys are getting screwed it sounds like.
HostPC doesn't support ColdFusion though...that site must be a legacy site, ya don't see ColdFusion too often these days, though Macromedia is still developing it and all that, Java and .Net seem to be taking over, ColdFusion is an oddity.
Ya know, if either of you guys need to contract web help...well...ya know where to find me :-)

Jul 08, 2005 10:59 am we're dropping the cold fusion site. although the shiznat in it's day, nobody wants to work in it, so out the door it goes.
This all got set up before I was here, so they just did the best they could, but it sorely needs to be updated. I've been slowly getting more control over things here, so it should be much better.
I'll poke at you on your scripts forum, maybe a little later when I get my bugs worked out. I'm planning on jumping into the SEO thing, and will probably contract you for some over-seeing and recommendations.
Jul 08, 2005 11:02 am groovy.
Good luck with the job, sounds like you got your hands full!

Jul 08, 2005 02:18 pm I register my domain names at aplus.net
Additionally, I also use HostPC, but I have to admit, that I'm getting annoyed at not being able to get in contact with anybody to have my questions answered. I have not been able to work with their helpdesk, for some reason, and all email go unanswered so far. Luckily I haven't had any serious questions that I couldn't eventually figure out on my own. Though I just posted another one to their forums as a shot in the dark, hoping for an answer...
Jul 08, 2005 02:22 pm IRC almost always has admins in it...
Jul 08, 2005 02:26 pm There's numerous ways you can contact us, or get support:
We have Flash demos available for the DirectAdmin control panel, using WSFTP and how to update your DNS available here: hostpc.com/content/category/1/88/2/
Our Helpdesk - helpdesk.hostpc.com - is open 24x7 for any issues that may arise. Most topics are covered in our user forums at hostpc.com/forums or at www.site-helper.com We also offer support via IRC at
irc.hostpc.com port 6668
channel: #support
I have no record of receiving any emails from you ... what address are you sending to? What is your domain?
Try an offsite email address (I dont check it frequently, but it is reviewed): [email protected]
Until I know in particular what username/domain name you're trying in the helpdesk, I can't go any further.
