Mixer help

Hi,
I’m ready to get a mixer to for my setup. I looked at the mixer you guys recommended on your newsletter, the UB1622FX-PRO Eurorack Mixer. I think its kool. I have a ton of sources that I would like to connect to my sound card such as an MD recorder, one VCR, one Hi 8 deck, One Svhs deck, a CD player, an external CD recorder, A phonograph player, A two track reel to reel, a cassette tape deck, a headphone pre amp, and of course some mics. I’m still in the newbie stage but want to get something that will last and give clean audio. I read some of your posted info on Mackie vs. Behringer mixers. I have about 300 bucks that I could spend…what do you recommend. I still don’t totally know what else I would use the mixer for in a PC based recording environment, so any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Gus

That is the exact mixer I just got, the 1622 and it is great, has 4 stereo ins for all your tapedecks, sound card and other stuff, 4 mono channels with new, super clean preamps, digital onboard effects and the ever-important 2 bus out...I don't know what to tell you in your exact situation, you have a lot of stuff, but I will tell you that the 1622 is performing wonderfully for me in the 3 weeks or so I have had it.

My forst experience with the Behringer Eurorack series has been an increasingly positive and confiding path. From what I've heard (my ear, and other owners words) go with Behringer. ;O) -j

Thanks Jamie. I went to Sam Ash in NYC today to look at mixers and stuff and they didn't carry Behringer. I asked someone there I know why that was and his answer was that Sam Ash lost a law suit with Behringer 2 years ago for copying there mixers. I had asked a sales person earlier and he told me that Mackie was better, that's why they don't carry Behringer. Just goes to show you why it’s so important to probe and ask more than one source. I also heard that if you sell certain items for a company that they may require that you don't sell there competition. All I want is a good mixer for a good cost without the politics.

Thanks again big man,
Gus

Ya, a lot of peeps have issues with Behringer, and in some ways I have read (even on this forum) that Mackie is better, but to my ears I can't hear a difference and my pocketbook sees a huge difference.

Even if Mackies are better, they cost twice as much, but they surely are not twice as good.

Gus, go into the FAQ thread of this forum and scroll down to the bottom, there is a list of gear we commonly recommend, there are many links there to Behringer mixers at Musician's Friend, you can buy them there, and if it is over $199 they don't even charge shipping, and mine was at my door in 5 days!

And buying through our links help support this community with meager commissions to fund server space and the time of the admins and mods

I will order one through your link on Tuesday for sure. I'm just a little confused as to what to get. I need to stay under 300 bucks for a mixer. The 1622FX-Pro is a great price and I leaning toward it but I was wondering if I put out a little extra and coped the MX2642A Eurorack for $249 or the MX1804X Eurorack Mixing Console also for $249 or the UB1832FX-PRO Eurorack Mixer which is also $249 or maybe the UB2442FX-PRO Eurorack Mixer for $349 all at musician friends I would have a better unit? As you can see three of the units are the same price, I'm trying to understand the difference in this units, pros and cons? I know I sound confusing...I guess because I'm confused.

The differance's are mot really performance, but moslty the number of channel's and variety of input combination's, and bussing option's. The 2442 is the best of the selection's you have listed. It offer's a few more channel's of input's and also aux. send and return channel's. And it also has multiple buss out's with option's. This might be the choice I would make with the amount of gear you are going to be patching into it. Otherwise, a patch bay would come in handy for the amount of stuff you have. I put in one of their bigger mixing desk's to start with and ran out of channel's and ended up adding 2 more of the rack mixer's just to accomidate my gear.

It'a mostly for the synth's, some of which hae multiple channel's of audio output. I also use and older DigiDesign SampleCell PCI which has 8 channel's of analog audio out. The rest are for POD and various other audio input's and deck's, with a few spare channel's for mic andother input's. It is a big mess, even with 3 patch bay's to try and keep it straight.

I swear you guys cannot be married. I am not allowed to have anything. "why do you need that guitar? it sound like the other 2" Why do you need another sound card? that one you got 2 years ago for 19.99 works fine. sound comes out BOTH speakers. What's a mixer for. oh i see. but you can only play one thing at a time so you don't need one. Cant you just put ONE new string on instead of a Whole pack thats just wasteful You dont need that effects thingy that says ZOOM on it- you have all those free directx plugins. another mic? but you got that one with your soundblaster so you already have two. New recording software-why that WAV recorder works fine in windows already! Web space? but cox.net gives you 10 MEG already!
this is my life- you should have heard her when i tried to take up more space in the den, just so i could breath and play guitar at the same time.........heres another thing-are you almost done? youve played that part twice, thats enough i need to check my email!
i envy you guys that have 300 bucks to spend on gear. then you are unaccosted when you use it. i really envy you.

hehehehe...I get away with a lot because my studio brings money into the house, so spending a small percentage of it.

Before that day however, I would get questioned by my wife, but rarely stopped. I remember the day I wanted to trade in my 4x10 cab and 2x15 cab for my bass rig for a smaller, more portable combo that sounded good and powerful. My wife was like "what, you need new gear again?" we drove up to Guitar Center and grabbed a bass, I plugged in to a few different amps then the one I thought I wanted...we rapped a few minutes got some numbers then went across the street for dinner and a drink at Old Chicago. There my wife said "ya, I can hear a big difference with that Ampeg, you should get that one". two days later I did.

But then, my wife is pretty cool...for the most part ;-)

5 years later I still have that amp and it still sounds great.

When we moved to VA from philly she needed a car. so i got her the car she wanted (jetta) and then i was allowed to go to the music store. so my ele/acu ibenz really cost me 8000 dollars. my keyboard (350.00) had to come with new leather furniture. so my keyboard cost 3000.00
man its rough. and as to this thread, i am all for mixers. i vote yes on mixers. (not much help at all)

mmm....
Wives, they are a neccesary evil!!
Me, I just stepped in to the jingles bussiness to make some money and buy some gear and have my wife happy. But I remember when I was a single man... I looked a new piece of gear that liked me, I bought it. Now I have to get my wife involved with the pros of buying new gear and of course talk about the new house that we have to build and that pair of shoes at the fancy store.
I like challenges so it's ok, plus is a blessing to have a person that enjoys when you are happy for a new and better mix or arrangement.
Women.....We wouldn't survive without them!!

Good luck with your new mixer Gus!!!

OOOO, all this talk of new stuff. I think I feel the need for speed, I gotta build a new PC and retire the old one to just being a server for my sampler. Honey, can I spend 600 dollar's to make the studio better? As long as the studio pay's for it, will be the answer. She rarely ever get's upset, as I am the king of the bargain basement deal's, and trading old for new. She was more then elated when I spent $600.00 on a new Fatar StudioLogic controler, especially since she knew the original price on it was $2100.00. Although I do get the same question's about why I need so many guitar's and all that stuff in those rack's!

My wife is strange, but so am I…. I have invested a bit in my digital darkroom over the years even though music brings in the money. So she would nag me often mostly about the amount of time I spend in the mother ship (My Basement). Why do you need that Umax Powerlook 111 scanner, I saw another one at staples for 49 bucks on sale she would say….or WHAT do you need a Polaroid Sprint Scan 120 for? Answer…for negs and medium format baby…..WHAT she would scream in her high pitched Brooklyn / Trinidadian accent without the accompaniment of Pan. Damn, I should have sampled that I thought. But that would only lead to lonely nights without my chicken roti and kool ginger beer. Anyway she is now working on her own web site and guess whose digital camera and scanner she asked to use? Ahaaaaa.
I’m now steadily building a PC based recording studio and reminding her that she can have streaming media incorporated into her site for free, well…almost free:>) Anyway it good to include them (the wife) in the mix you just go to have the right plugins…if ya know what I mean.

Gus, that was very poetic. I like the referance to the Mother Ship. I would almost refer to this room as that, except PigPen does still suite it better. And yes, they do appreciate the gear a bit more when it benefit's them a bit. Like when they can have a CD of exactly the tune's they want to hear, and nothing they don't want to hear.
