Just curious as to how people record environment sounds. I'm guessing they use a laptop with some sort of a decent mic, mixer, and soundcard. Do they make a small portable device targeted for environment recording?

you can take a pair of earbuds and attach them to your head but with the speaker grills pointing OUT. plug them into a stereo mic input and walk around. they'll act as mics positioned exactly like human ears, for true stereo sound.

thats what i heard, anyway--that some pros actually do this in the field. i've seen dedicated mics for this purpose, to wear on your head.

I personally use a Sony mini-disc for sampling outside, and environmental sounds. It works great and is pretty cheap compared to some rigs. I use a stereo mic that is a bit more expensive and it is powered by batteries for better quality sound.

You can and I know several peeps that do take their laptops out there, but I am one to not want to wreck that much money having it outdoors.

I think Jamie wrote an article about using a minidisc to get environmental audio a while back... check the Recording Tips section.

Ditto what noize said. I've a minidisc recorder and a good stereo mic (80$). I recorded a camp fire with very good results. I'll try and post a clip.

I also have a problem trying to see laptop screen in full daylight (although it may be due to my laptop's age). Also, trying to keep cables, power, etc. all organized would frustrate the dung out of me fast. much easier with small recorder and one good stereo mic.

You may want to look into an "Ambisonic Head" for true environmental recording.
