I was cleaning my "studio" today and I realized that I have a lot of cables and it took a little while to separate them all. This is a random/stupid question but how do all of you keep your mic/guitar/etc. cables in order? Zip ties? Elastics?

Jun 27, 2004 07:39 pm I like those re-useable zip-ties .('cause they don't pick up fuzz like the velcro ones.) I zip each cable separately, then I put a bungie-chord through the middle of the '0'-shaped pile, connect one end of the bungie to itself, and hang it up by the other end... out 'da way .
One 'lil trick I use that keeps me from picking up, and moving chords around all the time, was to have a 'transport' of 1" hooks, running across the ceiling from my mixer to the iso-booth, spaced so the chord is well supported, and wide enough to hold a couple of mic cables, and a headphone cable . I haven't had to move them, since I put them up there, so I'm thinking of replacing the hooks with 2" pvc.

Jun 27, 2004 11:33 pm good ingenuity hue!!!!
Thats better than what I do. I dont tie mine, and mash them into a box with a bat....... I fasten the box down very cleanly though.
I may try your method instead.....

Jun 28, 2004 08:24 am I roll mine up and toss em en the corner... either that or all my friends steal mine :| Out of all the cable I had I've only got two recording snakes left. Pisses me off cause everyones like "we don't have your cables"
Jun 28, 2004 08:58 am I just dangle them over a free-standing sound board I have...actually, an old office cubicle wall...

Jun 28, 2004 09:09 am 'sound board' sounds better...just call it that!
on my door, ive got a plastic hanging thing with about 30 pockets in, ideal for that...
Jun 28, 2004 09:13 am AH, thats a shoe rack, flame :-)
Nothing beats Noize's storage, he has a thing hanging on his closet door that is actually a cable rack right from a music store...

Jun 28, 2004 09:18 am I roll them up and then tie the bundle in two places with the little twisties that come in boxes of garbage bags. Then I toss the tied ring of cable over one of the hooks on my studio wall. More often than not, I skip the first step, though.

Jun 28, 2004 01:25 pm I think my studio has about 8 cables now. All interconnect. I had about 100 of them, (from the reel to reel days) and sold them to my brother who has a sound co. in Dallas. I had them all hanging on the clothes pole in the closet, that worked pretty good. They were happy talking to my shirts, so they said.
Jun 28, 2004 02:21 pm I wrap them around my hand in small coils about 4 inches in diameter. I don't tie them or anything, but they stay separate from each other a lot better if you make the coil small, rather than the traditional hand-to-elbow length. I store them all in a rubbermaid container sitting at the bottom of my rack that I like to think of as a rack drawer since I don't want to spend the money on a real one...

Jun 28, 2004 08:13 pm Loki, that's a bummer 'bout your pals snaggin' your cables ! I sympathise, especially with the "what cables ?" part .
That's crap .
Jun 28, 2004 08:48 pm Woah, Flametheband is now just flame
Jun 29, 2004 01:55 am I only have 3 cables and they're in use:D
Jun 29, 2004 10:39 am I put a little cable tie around all of my mic stands and cables to make sure they don't get mixed up with other people's. So far its worked great.
I used to lose them all the time, though.

Jul 06, 2004 12:10 pm Where does that "I haven't got your cables!" thing come from? Seems to be popular. I even colour coded mine, only to hear, "That's how I code mine too." Oh well...
Gotta disagree with Porpoisemuffin's 4" ring. Smaller loops can damage the cable inside.
I got some great hooks for hanging bicycles that are covered in a rubberized compound. I have three hooks - mic cables, guitar cables, small miscellaneous sh** (RCA/RCA, RCA/TRS,Patch cords etc.). Always at arms reach, always coiled and separated.
Sep 04, 2010 01:38 pm Too Good Post but I had about 100 of them, (from the reel to reel days) and sold them to my brother who has a sound co. in Dallas. I had them all hanging on the clothes pole in the closet, that worked pretty good.
well nice post :)

Sep 07, 2010 09:47 am Whoa! A true flashback!
So many recordings since then... (sigh)
All those tedious, sticky fumblings in basements, and backrooms... when all I could dream of was of getting out...
getting anywhere......
getting all the way to the F... B... I...
er... BWP.
