VSTi's.....

I'm looking for as many VSTi's as possible. My main focus is for orchestral sounds. I then, will trigger these VST instruments through my Triton using MIDI. It seems like the best way to get new clean sounds while controlling them with the Triton. I've heard Reason is a good program for sounds because of the refills. Any input on that?

As for the kind of orchestral quality I'm looking for, click below:
www.eastwestsamples.com/details.php?cd_index=797

The East West Orchestra software on that link have great sound but the price is way too steep.

So do you have a good source for VSTi's...possibly even free? www.tweakbench.com/instruments.php
That link offers a few free ones to choose from. The "field" is pretty cool and clean sounding. So something like that would be great where quality is high yet easy to control.

I'm also looking for ambient sounds (environment). I guess that wouldn't need to be a VSTi, so what's a good source for royalty-free ambient sounds.

Also, have you heard of the virtual vocalists?

Check out mariam. Pretty good for virtual voices.

Db, I remember a while ago you said you had a bunch of VSTi's. Where did you get yours?

I usually get them bundled with the applications I use (Sonar for example comes with a few) and Project 5 consists of several VSTi's. I also have gotten a couple from PowerFX, I love their Dyad softsynth...tho it's a DXi.

Noize is currently investigating several lesser-known freeware/shareware softsynths, so expect to see an article about that in coming weeks.

Just do a little bit of Googling and you're sure to find a few...

A VSTi Is an instrument created by Stienberg to work with their platforms, while DXi's are Direct X Instruments (i believe). Almost every peice of recording software will support DXi because it's so widley used, but VST support, while growing in the apps, is still limited. You can get VST to DX wrappers though which will make a VST work in a DX only application, such as sonar

ILL, make sure and look in our links section under software. There are a ton of links to freeware softsynths and from those sites they have links to even more. I am currently updating the links for even more stuff. If you do a google on softsynths you will also find tons.

VSTi's and DXi's differ the same way VST and DirectX plugins differ, just different standards...

bizl,

check out the music section at your local bookstore's magazine rack. either 'future music,' or 'computer music,' or one of those mags that come bundled with a cd-r every month has a collection of royalty free environmental sounds this month. or maybe it was last month. whatever--my bookstore still has one sitting out and i might pick it up.

Theres an ebay auction of the East West for far cheaper. I believe it's real and I've read some reviews on it. I'd pick it up, but still, that is more than I want to spend.

I'll email the seller on next pay day to see if he can get more available. Maybe within that time, I'll find someone who would sell a copy for far cheaper.
