I have an AKG D112 and am trying to get my double bass drum to cut through in the mix. I am running cubase SX 1.06. I used some tips for EQ and compression that I found in the forum section and it sounds great when I have a single hit, but as soon as I go into a double bass passage, the bassdrum disapears in the mix. Can anybody help me?

On a double Kick the first thing I do is mic both sides of the drum. The striker side for an attack "crack" and the oppisite side for boom. You might try either overdrive or subbass plugs on the "boom" track. I cheat this way a little sometimes. It adds a distinctive tone that will cut a mix a little better and also adds that powerfull "thud" that every drummer wishes he or she has!

The passages in question are actually quieter since the wind up into the hit is shorter in double bass patterns. With the added compression in the mix i think the double parts are just getting squashed too much. Like I said I get great sound on single bass passages. It's when I hammer the DB when i can't hear it at all (with the exeption of the last hit in the passage).

Oh yea, another nice plug is quadrafuzz. It has a "smasher drum" or something like that preset that will add some thud. On your compression, review your release times. I had one track that I had to push up to 150ms or so to get the full kick sound out of the compressor. Too tight of a release time will also have a tendency to make the kick fade in full passages.

hmm being a drummer first suggestion would be to play better.practice.i used to have the same problem i use ankle weights and now double bass pounds through everything. i still have that problem with blast beats(we're talking 220 bpm)

as far as recording/ fixing it in the mix goes......try gating more. most double bass is for metal where tight gated clicky kicks are desirable.

make a duplicate track of the kick and seperate the double bass parts from the single kick parts and even out their volumes accordingly rather than compressing the sound too much

also try taking off the front head when recording double bass and replace it with a thick blanket. this realy helps make each hit more clearly defined

and again practice. kick harder. consistancy is hard at fast speeds. ankle weights. listen to slayer eveyday.
