input monitoring -how can i fix?

i picked up cakewalk music creator2003 for $10 in a bargain bin ,i have my tape out of my mixer plugged into my soundcard but there is about a 1-3 second delay on the input monitoring ,does anyone know of a solution to this or am i destine to use one headphone to multitrack
