I'm rather a total newbie at using samples as percussion in my recordings... Can anybody tell a guy with no software drum programs how to (inexpensively) begin using sampled sounds as drum hits? Is there a free or working shareware tool that allows you to create and sequence beats using user-provided samples? (and hopefully comes with its own presets as well)

I'd like to participate in the music contest, but I don't know how to start using the samples in a beat or beats.
