I'm moving on up to a real professional quality hard disk recorder, but i'm seriously confused to just a few things. any help with this would be great... i'm looking into hard disk recorders such as the mackie sdr 24/96 or the alesis hd24, but i'm not sure how these work with the external mixers...and i am able to use the external mixer to eq/change the levels, etc of each individual channel after it's been recorded..right? would it need to be a mackie board? is it different from a regular one? any answers are greatly appreciated. thanks.

well, as far as i know they work with any board but you'll have to upgrade your hd recorder with adat cards for use with a digital board.

how they work is they are connected in such a way that you use your board's preamps and direct out to the hdr so it can record. those same corresponding tracks are then output back to the board for mixdown/monitoring (very breif explaination).

Yes, you'll be able to change levels etc. once you record with the external mixer or 'in the box' with the software provided by the rackmount recorder (most hookup directly with a crt/lcd screen).
