Horrors!! I Can't Burn CD's Anymore!

I was wondering if anybody could help me out with this...

My Windows XP, Dell computer came with a built in high speed CDR/CDRW drive. It's always worked great for me and I've never had any issues for 2 years. I always use Nero 5 to do my burning. Then about a week ago I went to copy a CD and thought I would try out the direct copy feature in Windows Media Player. Then part way through the burn either I intentionally cancelled it, or it just stopped burning and came up with a bunch of errors and said it couldn't copy half the tracks. Then the next time I went to burn a music CD in Nero, the computer just froze. It has done this ever since. It also does this when I try to burn in XP or with Media Player. I e-mailed Dell about the issue but they just sent me some practically useless auto-responce and I don't really want to deal with their tech support beyond that if I don't have to. Originally I thought the whole drive was broken, but it does play CDs, so I thought the burning must be broken, but then I found out that it burns Data CD's just fine. So I have no clue how to fix this... And I can't live without my CD burner... How will I test my mixes? Thanks guys.

It's been my experience that CD burners have a shlf life of a couple years. Not laways but for me, I have wound up replacing mine every couple of years.

When you buy one, buy a cheap one cuz it will fail eventually, and it won't fail any sooner than the expensive ones...

at least thats been my learned experience over the last 8 years or so.

Yet it still burns Data CDs, so I'm thinking it must be a software issue...

I have an old 2x burner on my other Dell computer that's been working for over 5 years.

Yeah, some people don't have the issue I have, it's just how it's been with me...

if it burns data CD's then it's a good burner...thats really weird.

It's the software. Nero 5 had issues I believe with direct cd. uninstall and re-install or get nero 6.

As I said before, Nero is not the only program that won't burn audio CD's. I've been using this same version of Nero and it's been working fine for a year. I did reinstall it. No luck.

It's not the recorder if you can burn data discs it's something in the software that's preventing this. I've had my share of tribulations with multiple recording software on my computer. I bet you if you did a fresh install everything would work perfectly!

Porp, try going to Microsoft update and I believe there is an update that is a few weeks old by now, but it fixes some issues with Media player and buring issues. My son had the same issues till he installed the updates and it now works fine. And he as well is using Nero to burn alongside the media player burning utility.

ahhhh, thats right Noize, I forgot about that CD-Burning update a while back.

Also, given the couple new threats on the internet, a little visit to Windows Update is a wise thing anyway...

Lost for words with all to say.

If the update doesn't help, do this. Uninstall windows media player and Nero. Reinstall the media player (through windows updates is the easiest way) and then reinstall Nero. Maybe that will help.
