POST EFFECTS???

i am using Cool edit pro 2.0 which some of you know. I also am using a M-audio delta 44 multi-input interface.

My question is: When i am mastering I want to run post effects (aka EFX rack/ Compression). Is it possible to bring it back in to CEP still in sync. If you loop it directly it of course feeds back. I just would rather not us anymore plugins.

ANY IDEAS?

P.S. ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET THAT FINAL POLISH SOUND ON THE PRE-MASTER?

THX.

I can't touch the first question because I don't use CEP, but yes, you certainly should be able to.

As for question two, the "polish" is in the mastering...the preamster is just the mixdown. There are dozens of threads here about mastering, just search them out.

I have only used what plugins the program already had, so I dont know any better. I just assume a high quailty effects rack may make a difference.

hmm...well do i need to run post effects. is that what the pros do?

i guess the real question is: Are the additional plugins going to make the overall mix sound just as good as if i used the high quality rack and compression units?

studio38, I have CEP2 but I don't think I have the answers you're looking for. I just directly apply the effects I need in CEP, and don't go the real-time effects processing route (which is what I think you're referring to here). I usually just save my final mix pre-master onto cd before making any mastering tweaks. Then I just apply the effects I need right away after previewing each one.
PS, a lot of people here do know how to get that "final polished sound"... and a few were kind enough to describe the process in the Recording Tips section. More specific questions that you can't find the answer to in there, or on previous forum threads by using the Search feature, I'm sure folks would be glad to answer for you here.
I hope this helps... Welcome to HRC :)

Hey HRC THANKS.

..my question would be then... when you save your final mix premaster onto a cd.. are you saving individual tracks? or are you saving the whole project. then what do you do with it. when i burn a cd down that means i have finished it.

See each of my projects probably consist of no less then 25 tracks. so saving them individaully would be hard, but make sense. i could bring them back after post effects, but is there a easier way? I could spend all night trying to sync it back up.

LOL....sometimes i go around my elbow to get to my thumb...or something like that.

I usually just save the whole project, so I can work on it later if need be. It's really up to you how abling you'd like your backups to be. If you know that you'll never need to adjust the mix again for any reason, I guess you can ditch your project files... I guess I don't have that kind of faith in myself, hahahaha... :) So I save the whole thing. If cd space is a problem, you can burn it to a dvd, assuming you have that capability. If it's not an issue, just save the resulting wav file. But it's really a matter of what you want to enable yourself to have the ability to change about the project once the master folder and files are deleted from your machine. Me, I want to stay on the safe side, and the space isn't an issue, so I save the whole project onto cd. You could alway save selected files from the project onto different cds and label them thusly, to be able to rejoin the tracks later in a folder on your hard drive - but that sounds like a pain to me...

HRC, OR ANYONE.

do you run your effects realtime on vocals or do you just do it during the mixdown with plugins.

if i had a great effects rack would it give me a better sound running the effects realtime through that or using the plugins.

...i am looking into the waves native power pack.

...am i chasing my tail, yet?

I run compression while recording vox, everything else I do via plugins.

I use external hardware compression on the way in, and apply effects later with the plugins. If you had a great effects rack it could potentially sound better than using plugins... I guess it all depends on what you want to use. The average listener won't know the difference between a reverb that costs $500 or one that comes bundled with CEP. But really, it all depends on your intended audience - who are you trying to impress with your music?

Also, keep in mind that you can buy anything from value-driven hardware purchases to world-class tools or you can go the other route and pay for professional mastering.

A word of friendly advice... TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE SAME AS SHOUTING. Plus it's hard on the eyes... :)
