Laptop ---> Multitrack recorder

Hu guys, I would like to know if it is possible to have some sort of hardware to connect a laptop (so cant be PCI card etc)to a multitrack recorder, and then have the relevent software to be able to have 'live' amplitude graphs produced. For example, i hit the snare, and the signal goes into the laptop, and a graph is produced as a result. So i can see how much compression and volume change i need for each instrument.
I know this question may be a bit hazy, so plz ask questions and i will try to be more specific.
thanks

Depending on the number of ins you need, service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear from lexicon might be a cool unit, or the Laptop version of the Echo Layla service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

There are other USB and Firewire options as well...

thanks, dB. Ill only need a left and right input, from the master out on the multitrack.
I just found something that i think may be useful to me, at www.edirol.com/products/info/ua1d.html
I have a SPDIF output on my multitrack, so if i can get the signal to my laptop through this, what software would i need to view amplitude graphs etc, i wouldnt really need to edit it, i use my mixer for that.
thanks

Do you want to view the actual wave fileas a whole? There are several free apps in our links section under freeware. They are simple audio editers and will do the job nicely. If you need more then that there are other apps available as well.

Oh, hell, if you need just 4 ins there are MUCH cheaper solutions...Edirol has some, M-Audio has some smaller cards the Quattro USB comes to mind...

Noise, yeh i just want to view the whole incoming signal. Ive got audacity and some other small programs, but how would i select the usb as an incoming file like a live stream, instead of viewing saved files ie mp3, wav.
And is the edirol a good choice for what i want?
p.s. would wavelab 4 be able to stream live audio, coz i got a demo of that
thanks again

I would think the demo can stream in live audio. But you should be able to imort the saved wave files by choosing the USB as the audio in port. Otherwise I beleive you can transfer them live via the s/pdif connection into Wavelab via the same rout by shoosing the USB port as the audio in port as well.

Does your multitracker have a USB port as well, then you could just transfer the files without the need for an external audio port?

no it doesnt have USB port. Only outputs on multitrack are MIDI, s/p dif, master RCA. Whwn ure in wavelab or any other software, how do u select the live input source?

In the options or preferances tab you will get a menu that will allow you to set up your audio interface for input and output as well.

As far as the s/pdif that will work just fine to stream in the audio, although it is going to be in real time rather then just a file dump which would take only seconds.
