What would be better, Event TR5N with the frequency range of 53-20 +/- 3DB or

Alesis MKII 45-20 +/- 3DB or

20/20 V2 Passive
38-20 +/- 3DB

Event is 299 a pair
20/20 is 299 a pair
Alesis 199 pair

I know everyone is raving about the Event...Haven't heard negative things about Alesis *yet*...(looks at DB *grin*)

you have now

MKII's are crap IMHO. They try to emulate NS10's (which I personally don't rate too highly, but I know everyone else does :) and fail quite miserably.

They sound awful and mixes on them rarley carry well until you really get to know them.

I have not yet heard a set of speakers from Alesis that I wouldever recommedn buying. Monitors One's are the worst, Monitor Two's are marginally better and the MKII's are very comparible to the Monitor Two's. ALesis monitors have a very harsh high end and little low end response.

I really like much of Alesis gear for the price range they play in, but their speakers are not very good.

IMHO.

DB bro I was waiting for your personal touch ;) I'm gonna be getting the Events in a couple of days. Heard really good stuff about them; on this site and even offline reviews....

Whats the link to your JBL's that you got?

Ya, the events have gotten good reviews, I've heard them and like them, I still dig my JSL's more than any tho, presumably cuz Ihave had them over 4 years so I know them really well. I have had many clients, bandmates and friends remark about how good they sound as well service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

THanks for confirming what I've suspected but wasn't quite sure of... My wife, bless her, got me a pair of Alesis mkII's for some occasion, i think valentine's day, last year, and i've been thinking there's something just off about them. My guitars never quite sound full, and the high end REALLY makes my ears tired after a while. It seems I have to fight to get some low end, and even then it sounds boomy rather than clear. (Sigh) And I can't just scrap them, cause they were a gift you know... Live and learn .......

drayburn, the situation can be made better a couple of ways, first make sure your room is tuned properly, some sound absorption, some reflection...maybe more absorption to try to cut down those highs. Also, maybe consider a subwoofer (does Alesis make any so they are closer voice-matched?), I normally don't recommend subs cuz you REALLY have to be careful when setting them up so you don't start mixing resulting in no lows cuz your sub is too loud in the studio...but in your case you could save your girlfriend a little heartbreak and get a better sound. Wouldn't be perfect, but it would help.

Thanks dB, the fact that I'm in a funny- shaped corner of the finished part of the basement doesn't help, I'm sure. I'll check the links here for advice on tuning my room a little better.

Actually, an oddly-shaped room is many times better. The worst room you can make for your studio is a perfectly square room, are rectangle with all parallel walls. This create phase cancellation, if you have walls slightly out of parallel it bounces waves in different directions. If they are parallel use bookshelves full of books and such to to create interesting surfaces to bounce sound waves around.

And yes, read the "building a studio" series in our tips for more advise.

Tottaly agree on the odd shaped room. I have a fairly square room here, but do several things to detract from that. I keep the gear closet doors open behind me and have several odd piece of shelving and gear strewn about to keep the room from sounding like it would normally. And the walls are all treated with Auralex panels to tune the rest of it.

I am with dB on the JBL's being a good moniter, not my personal choice but they are fairly easy to train you ear to.

The Events are a great moniter as well, very flat and easy to learn as well. I personally love my KRK K-Roks though as they have an extremely flat curve and for the wide variety of music I get into they seem to cover the spectrum well, perfect bottom end as they are front ported and use 8" drivers and the ports are located in between the low end driver and the high end driver so the picture is perfect.
