Make sure you go through the audio device setup and make sure you have the drivers enabled and chose the proper type. Also open your Window mixer thingy and make sure the mic in isn't muted, which it often times is.

ANY card can work with Cakewalk...how well it performs depends on the quality of the card itself.

i checked windows volume control and all is well. i opened up magix studio 7 and it plays back just fine.

when i first open up cakewalk i get "the following driver either donot support the current audio format or is being used by another application"

my yamaha ac-xg is listed below and is asking to either disable, or use anyway.

i don't know. is my sound card a good one?
will my motu 828 be considered my sound card?
with the motu will i still use my yamaha ac-xg?

oh boy...I am currently beta testing a sound card for Philips (which should be in stores within a few weeks) and getting that error from Cakewalk Sonar as well. That is a problem with the card's driver. First I would go to the manufacturer's web site that made the laptop and find the newest drivers and install those, if that does not help go right to Yamaha's website and take a peak.

Failing all of that, go to Google and do s earch on "Yamaha AC-XG drivers" and see what comes up. Doing that simple Google search has helped me find some very obscure drivers or fixes at times. Though it may take some time weeding thru results, I often find them.

Now that reminds me, there is a new driver for that Philips card, I gotta go install those and test 'em...thanks for the unintentional reminder :-)

I think you may have searched wrong. I did a quick search and found all these. 24 pages of places to get the drivers you need. www.google.com/search?hl=...G=Google+Search One of them will surely help you out as they weem more current. i am guessing the driver you have installed is a bit older and under reted for this type of use. The 828 will indeed be a better piece of gear. and yes you will want to run that as your main recording and playback device. Although you can run the Yamaha as your system sound card in windows.

Unless the sound you are recording was any stereo qualities to it, you are best off recording it in mono. Noize will argue about this, but he is wrong :-P

I wont argue it, I promise. Mono is first choice for vocals. And as dB noted, stereo only if you are utilizing a processor before the vocal hits the track. Such as chorus or a stereo phase or reverb effect.

Wha!

When we were scoring that vampire movie you insisted on doing everything in stereo...of course we didn't have any vocals on that, but still...

Ya, vocals is the only thing I wont do in stereo. Otherwise, yes you are right I like the synths and all in stereo. A bad habit sometimes I guess. Although I did record all the guitars for Svenghali in mono so that should count for something. :-)

right on, mono.

in cakewalk there is left, right and stereo. there isn't actually an option for mono. i'm assuming that you just pick either left or right. is there a right one to pick for mono or does it matter?

If it's a mono signal, the left and right channels will be the same, so just pick one of them.
