going direct from guitar to the board will process only the guitar. Putting on an effects loop will allow you to process effects to any instrument assigned to that loop on the board.

if you're only using a guitar then I would just plug into the zoom then into the board, save the effects loop for other things. As far as good sound goes, what sound are you trying to achieve?

i was told that the boss pedal only overdrives an already overdrivien guitar, i like a classic 60's type of fuzz like the kinks for example, but then i want it to scream a little when im soloing-only thing is i dont notice a huge amount of difference between the overdrive o my zoom pedal on its own or when its combined with the boss sd-1

Ya, so plug into the Zoom first then into the Boss. Or maybe put the Boss into the effects loop. But I think first alternative is best.

To respond to the act that you don't notice much difference when using the Zoom by itself or with the Boss pedal, I've noticed that when trying to use two separate overdrives like that the sound gets more compressed. An overdrive pedal tends to compress somewhat anyway, and when you run two of them the sound sometimes gets a little squishy. You coukd counteract this a little by cranking some high end on the Boss pedal if you have that option.
