I am in the process of opening a recording studio for hip hop in Washington State.
So my question is this: Are ADATs necessary? I hear of people who use ADATs and how they are important. But I can record with multi-track software on the PC and quality is great too.
So is it necessary to have one?
Would I notice much of a difference in quality?
Why would someone want to have an ADAT?
Since I've never messed with them, I barely know anything about them.
To all the people who have responded to my posts, thanks for all the help. I'm learning more and more each day.

Feb 15, 2004 06:19 pm No, you don't need them. Many places have them just to be compatible, so if I client walks in with some tracks partly done, and they are on ADAT, then the studio can finish them. If you find yourself in theat situation, just rent them for that session.
You will notice no quality difference. I have worked with ADAT, editing is a pain in the butt compared to PC-based editing...argh...

Feb 15, 2004 07:01 pm you should be able to pick up a used one for next to nothing when the time arrives that you need it.
ADAT to me seems to have all the hinderences of analoge (sync problems) and digital (16bit 44.1khz) with neithers benifits :)

Feb 19, 2004 06:56 am its alright if youre making early 90s influenced music...
Feb 19, 2004 07:06 am In all fairness, I did a recording with a previous band I was in using the guitarists Adat machine. The recording turned out good and all that, but it is SO much easier and quicker via a PC interface.

the easier the recording, the less you have to worry about with the performance - thats my angle on it

Feb 19, 2004 08:26 am I had a recording class in college that used an ADAT... At the time it struck me as a real pain, and just another form of tape - although it could be chained. I remember asking my professor why it was so great... if I recall correctly, he said that basically it's because of the expandability. It seems to me that pc's are a lot MORE expandable, with more flexibility, and the sound quality is the same.
