Alright fellas. I finally made up my mind about an interface. i have one day left to win my bid on an auction on ebay for the motu 828. i've already received a firewire pcmica card to hook this interface to my laptop.

now i have one more concern. i am using magix studio 7 as my recording software. i found a copy of cakewalk 2004 xl for $105.00 on ebay. i've read the specs but still am confused as to what are the main advantages to having this software versus what i alreaady have.

thanks

there's so many out there it's hard to really say what's goign to be best for your needs. you should donwload the demo versions from the developers' websites and try each one out until you find one that suits you. that's what i did more than 3 years ago and cakewalk 9 was what i went with.

Sonar is their flagship product, gear towards pro studios and the like... that said it's great software

Ya, Sonar is just the next evolution of Cakewalk. Cakewalk was simple "Cakewalk Home Studio", "Cakewalk Pro Audio" etc. and the more feature packed version was "XL" instead of "Cakewalk 10" after 9 they renamed the product "Sonar" and the feature packed edition is "Producer" with the lighter version (which still rocks) is the "Studio Edition".

So, Sonar 3 is really sorta just "Cakewalk 12 XL" :-)

I just got the motu 828 mk II, good choice. You'll be able to drive either asio or wdm based software from it. Haven't been much on the site lately because of the setup...plenty 'o questions later though.
Remember, the only firewire pcmcia adapter that motu recommends that will not cause problems has a texas instruments or lucent chipset. I bought the ADS pyro 1394 DV from amazon for about 50 bucks. Just because your adapter works now, it WILL have problems later (during different phases of mixing, etc) if it is not TI or lucent. The ADS was specifically recommended to me by motu. Have fun.
