Pronunciation

One thing that's plagued me with learning most of what I know about sound from the internet, I have little idea of how to pronounce alot of words, especially the names of manufacturer's. For instance the German "eu" gets pronounced "oy" so Neumann gets pronounced "NOY-min" and the German e is a soft e (unless it's preceeded by an i) and "ei" is a hard i sound such as in Einstein so Sennheiser is "SAN-hy-zer". But there'e alot of other brand names I'm clueless on. Any help would be appreciated, and please, no total guesses, only fact and/or hypothesis. and also, don't be embarrased to speak up.

Behringer : I've been saying BEAR-in-jer now that i've heard it said that way in a few music shops around town. before i was saying buh-RING-er cause they boldened the ING in their logo.

Alesis : i say uh-LESS-sis, but i've heard a few people say OW-less-sis and now i'm not sure. even heard one guy say uh-LEES-ee-us.. not sure where he got that fourth syllable from.

Akai : just confirmed from a televison commercial, it's pronounced uh-KYE

Technics : This one seems totally divided everywhere I go 50/50 between tek-NEEKS and TEK-nicks ... swear to god, i've never heard such confusion over how to pronounce something. i've haerd DJs argue over this and ulitmately settle on calling them "twelves" as in Techincs 1200's!

more to come as i think of them (there's quite a few!)

just a note - i'm using caps to show accented emphasis, dashes to separate syllables, and my best attempt at phonetic spelling according to my backwoods Appalachian American drawl. hope it's not too confusing.

and another thing, i'm going to smack the next person that pronounces the first syllable in Yamaha "yam" as in the vegatable. That vowel sound isn't even in the Japanese language

hmm, thanks jues and forty, more confusion! so uh-LEE-sis. I would have never guessed. more opinions welcome! i have a feeling there's a few more pronuciations floating around out there. and here's two more to add to the confusion:

Aphex: you'd think it would be uh-FEKS like "effects" because they make, well, effects processors, but I realize Aphex Twin aka Richard D. James gets his name from Aphex Systems LTd (at least he credits them on his albums) and everyone around here (in my town) says "AY-fix TWIN" so I'm really confused on the pronunciation of both the company AND the artist :OS

Oktava: I know jack about Russian so I always wondered if you accented the first or second syllable. Is it "AHK-ti-vuh" or "ahk-TAY-vuh"???

thanks everybody who contributes

Oh man, it's always embarrassing to ask for something at a music store and pronounce it wrong... The sales guy looks at you like, "Huh?"

Now, cymbal names are the toughest of all!

I used to think that "SABIAN" was pronounced "SUH-BUY-EN"... Apparently the emphasis is such that it is pronounced "SAY-BEE-UN"

Then there's "PAISTE". I always thought that was just pronounced "PASTE"... Like cut and paste. Then I heard someone say, "PASTE-EE". I thought THAT was weird... but then I heard someone say "PUY-STEE." Now, I don't know where that comes from but it totally breaks all the rules of English pronunciation!

Zildjian I've never had a problem with.

I always wondered about Rode. I always thought it was "ROAD-EE" until just recently.

jues, are you saying that the second syllable of aphex is emphasized? that seems extremely unusual!

porp, what did you determine the correct pronunciation for paiste is, after all? and how do you pronounce zildjian, because i have no clue.

as in Aphex Twin

'ay FEX.

yeah i've heard everything from "ZILL-shen" to "ZELL-jin"

it's Turkish isn't it? not sure what language they speak over there, maybe Arabic?

and as for "ay-FEX", that's gotta be that Brit accent involved there somewhere, cause that doesn't even roll off my tongue right. hehe

feels more natural to say "uh-FEX" as in "special effects" :O)

lol!

I know I'm just gonna record myself saying aphex tonight (makes sense, seeing how we have all this recording stuff lying around ;) - then we'll set the record straight.

jues.

Yeah, I think Aphex is pronounced "AY-FEX" like jues said. That's what I've always thought, at least, and I'm not British, either :)

I think that Paiste is pronounced "Puystee" because that's what I've heard salespeople say, but I think it's pretty weird...

I've always said and heard Zildjian as "ZILL-JEN" or "ZILL-JIN"

Ya, it could just be Americans pronouncing it that way. But Zappa even pronounced it that way, and he used them by the donzens. But then I have never been to Germany and listened to them say it. Oh well.

i guess i dont understand jues' system here. if you scroll up there, he's using a little ' on the first syllable but capitalizing the second syllable. that little ' means (accent this) to me, and caps also means (accent this).

i dunno, when i say aphex twin, i say AYYYYYY (fex) twin.

jim (fxman) called Alesis and the recorded message deff said "uh-LEE-sis" so forty and jues were right on that. here's a good one:

Moog - a real common mispronunciation, alot of people including myself said Moog like the sound a cow would make. But a recent ad for the MicroMoog in Keyboard magazine stated the synth with Bob Moog's namesake rhymed with the word "vogue" (you know, like the Madonna song). Apparently it's Swiss or Swedish or something.

as for Aphex Twin, i think i'll just keep calling him Richard D. James and if i get that Aphex Systems 109 EQ i want, i think i'll just call it "that EQ" :OD

This is a great thread.

I've always read Neumann as NEW mun, but I could buy NOY mun since I remember from some computer science class the name Von Neumann, pronounced the same way. (He was the guy who thought of the seperation of data and processing btw) ;)

Vox - not the company, just the abbreviaion for vocals, is that said "vocks", or "vocals"? cause "vocks" sounds funny.

Good one, Jamie...I've only read that one also, Ive never heard it pronounced. Maybe its only an abbreviation in writing, just like when we see "etc.", we say "etcetera"...er, however that's spelled.

I thought of another one, too: somebody mentioned Edirol lately, which I've never heard said out loud.

And a long-time boggler for me has been "Hartke"...I've heard Heart-KEE and Heart-k, making a painful consonant sound combining the t and k.

Jan 28, 2004 02:45 pm

ive heard edirol as eye-der-all.
and for vox.. i actually pronounce it as the abreviation. one syllable. the vo sound like vogue. the x sounding kinda like six.

i use it a lot when im talking to some of my musician friends locally about their mixes.. ie. 'the vox could come up a little bit in the mix'.

Edirol is pronounced ED-er-All. That one I know from many calls to tech support at Roland and listening to their little add that names off all their goodies.

Edirol agreed with Noize on this one, i think it's ED-er-all cause that's how a film school student I know who gave me the catalog pronouced it.

Hartke I've always said HART-kh like that hard consonant sounds Tadpui said. Now I'm not so sure :O)

Noize, how do you say vox??

Member

Jan 28, 2004 07:14 pm

I have always said and heard Hartke: Heart-Key
Vox: "Voh-ks" i agree with collapse as the Vo in Vocals, as opposed to the "Vah" as in the amp company VOX

Yep Vo as in vocals. It just looks better as vox instead ov vocs.

Can someone tell me if i'm pronouncing the German band Einstürzende Neubauten correctly, i've been led to believe its pronounced
"Oun-stroun-za-day-noy-bow-ten"

oun as in noun without the n
str as in straw
za rhymes with ha
day as in today
noy like neuman above
bow as in take a bow
ten just like the number 10

um, so does that sound right?
