Let me have a look at some things, I know I have seen one that is purely written for vocal stuff. I will post back here soon.

And I will ask this just for my sake, when you say vocals sound nice, what exactly do you mean?

Yeah, I think you need to clarify exactly what "sound nice" constitutes. :)

I use everything but the kitchen sink on my vocals. <G> ...hmmm kitchen sink...

Well it so much depends on the sound your going after. I went to your NWR site to hear a sample of your voice, but you don't have anything posted with u singing. <G>

Maybe post who you'd like to sound like (effect wise) to give everyone an idea of where you want to go. :) (oh and for me it better be fairly main stream, pre-2000, if ya want me to recognize any of them LOL)

btw, black rock, Rocks! Needs vocals though <G>

well thanks dan. i'm thinking of speeding that song up. and changing the verse, definitely, as the verse mood is unidentifiable.

i guess i'm not looking for parametric eq's and stuff (have some of those already). more for something like a suite of vocal patches with effects. i have no idea if such a thing exists as software. but for example, my old br-8 recorder had a few vocal patches built into it, and some of them produced nice, compressed vocals with effects, no tweaking needed. i like presets because they give me a starting place.

forty, I can think of a couple of pieces of external hardware that are designed for vocal use, but as of yet have not seen pluggin versions of said stuff. I will keep an eye out however for anything that might suit that need.

I'm really looking for something along the same lines as forty -- something with some presets to do all of those things EQ, multi-band compression, warming, tape saturation, all in the right order, and all pre-tweaked. I figure if I see several vocal presets, each with a different objectives, eg male, female, lead, backup, warmer, more presence, them I might learn from that what parameters effect what, and what constitutes just-right, vs over-kill or under-kill.

So Loki,
Do you run Ozone and magneto both on individual vocal tracks? and if so, in what order? Any particular presets you especially like in Ozone?

Ozone 3 has presets for vocals (among ton's of others), though I don't use Ozone on indivdual tracks usually.

It's really not that well suited IMO for individual track effects because it's pretty heavy in the resource usage department. I haven't really compared how it stacks up against using individual effects in multi-tracking, on a case by case basis it might be more efficient if you used most of it's effects vs the same # separate.

Maybe I'll do a test with it and see how it performs. I'll report back my findings. :)

Yeah, lots of good info here I appreciate it too. I recently bought Ozone & Vintage Warmer. I whipped Ozone on a couple of songs I recorded of the 3 piece band I've been working with. I used the preset: CD Master with Excitener & Widener. The results were nothing short of amazing, IMO. The loudness came way up, increased fullness & punch, and better sizzle on guitar.

So the next couple of improvements I would like to achieve are:

1) Warm up the vocals a bit more -- these are female vocals and sound a bit thin and peaky in the high end. I've already got some light H/W compression on them and used EQ to notch out some offensive frequencies around 7khz. I'm hoping I can use Ozone and/or VW on the vocal tracks to thicken them up a bit. Any recommendations on which tool / setting to use?

2) Warm up the overall mix. I'm already running the final mix throuh Ozone (CD Master / Excitener / Widener / Mastering reverb). If I was going to use Vintage Warmer in the effects chain, with some tape saturation, would it be best to tack it on the end of the whole Ozone suite?

I use vintage Warmer on vocals as well as guitars and drums and I guess everythig that might need it. It is very adjustable but does take some practice. It can be very subtle or out right cranky whatever the need. Remember you can get at more control on the back. It has two sides accesable by the software.
