I haven't seen it but I will name one of my favourite little known films. It's called "Man Bites Dog" and is a french flick that is banned in at least 20 countries. It's a black and white film with english subtitles. This movie is classified as a comedy, and does have a few funny parts, but it is extremely vulgar and graphic. It is a film which is set up like a documentary (think blair witch). In the documentary the film crew follows around a serial killer while he does his business, it has some very disturbing scenes as well as the occasional funny ones. This is one of my favourite movies because it actually desturbed me and made me value life more. I swear until the end you can't tell that this isn't a real documentary. If you can find it this is a great flick, but I don't suggest anyone uner 18 watch it, nor someone with a weak stomach, and I warn you that if you do watch it you may end up turning it off within the first hour and having nightmares.

i just saw cold mountain. pretty good. the book was better. i liked the fiddle music in the movie. gotta love those old civil war tunes played on the devil's instrument.

man bites dog seems to be on prominent display at the local border's right now. that's odd, based on your description!

At borders really? Well the US is one of the countries that it's not banned in, but most of the bigger stores won't carry it. I know Hastings does, that's where I got my copy. i guess it makes sense since it is supposed to be a comedy that a store would have it on display. Ah well

River's Edge is cool. I saw that one back in high school. I thought it did a great job of showing different sides of the whole situation... some kids wanting to tell authorities, some wanting to band together and keep it a secret. It had interesting characters, and the whole movie was like watching 2d-personality kids concerned about image, coolness, and disillusion with the modern world, morphing into real people with real problems. I agree, it's a very overlooked film. It's been a long time since I saw it, I should get that one from the library. A good film.

Other films? hmmm, let's see... other films that I'd call gems, for one reason or another... War of the Worlds (1953), The Thing (1983), Blade Runner, Night of the Living Dead, The Terminator, Tron, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Brazil, Near Dark, Army of Darkness, Repo Man. Obviously not all of these movies are entirely unknown or overlooked, but I think pretty much all of them have achieved cult status. Of them, I'd have to say my fave is The Thing - I've seen that show a dozen times now, bought it on vhs too. They made a killer video game out of it not too far back, also on my shelf. :)

Well... once you manage to swallow the whole cheesy "man gets sucked into a computer and turned into a program that has to save the world (of the computer) from destruction (by reformatting the hard drive, or whatever it was)" then the effects and the whole concept behind the digital world are pretty cool. Obviously there's a certain amount of fantasy at work there...

i used to watch tron as a kid. the effects were neat. the blue light, etc. and i learned my killer frisbee throw directly from that film. (without the discus-like wind-up.)

one thing i liked about river's edge is that everyone in town is disconnected from true feelings in a totally different way. the killer kills to feel the ultimate control. glover thinks he's in a movie. the little brother seeks negative attention. dennis hopper kills to feel the only connection he's capable of--the loss that comes from grieving. no one's really connected or alive...theyre just all isolated, playing roles and seeking thier various buzzes.

I lived TRON! When they released the stand up video game, it was the first ever of the games that ran on Laser Disc. Meaning it could do ten times more then any game of its time. I played it day and night. Then with the release of the movie they had a national compitition for the stupid game. I won the local tournaments and got to go to the national finals. Sadly I only place 8th. I was so bummed out I never played the game again. And I couldnt even watch the movie for years after that.

But I gotta admit, Tron does dese3rve cult status, it was a pretty far fetched flic and it took some guts for them to think up some of those silly things. I still see space paranoids in my sleep!!!

Hey Loki, maybe you can answer this... How does Army of Darkness fit into the Evil Dead series? I never got that.... I thought it was supposed to be Evil Dead 2, but there's already an ED2

Man, Disks of Tron was a frickin' amazing standup arcade game... When I win the lottery, I'll have that one and Sinistar in my barroom. I spent sooooo much on DoT...
BTW, I bought the Tron 2.0 computer game they have now, and I'm playing my way through it.... it's a very cool game! And they have a light cycles sub-game with a bunch of different arenas. You may want to look into that one... Tron 2.0 is excellent so far, with amazing graphics!

Im with ya on the Soilent Green movie Loki. I have been trying to find it on DVD here, but it seems they dont keep it for long, and they only order one copy at a time. I think maybe Ill check on line to try and find it.

TC, I gotta admit. If I find one in good shape I have a space reserved for it down here. It was a big machine though. But standing inside it and playing was the most awsome experiance back in the day. I will have to check ot Tron 2.0 for the PC though, it sounds like my kind of game.

Army of Darkness falls into the evil dead trilogy right before ED2 if memory serves me right... but I don't know the details. I remember though that at the begining all the stuff started to happen while they were in the cabin looking through the necronomicon, so I think it's either before part two, or an alternate part two however you want to look at it.

Man, I was so staying away from Rocky Horror Picture Show. I wont even say how many times I watched that flick at midnight. I even went to the 25th aniversary party in Minneapolis. And no, I never dressed as Frankenfurter.

But alas another no one has mentioned yet as a cult classic would be Heavy Metal. If you have never seen it it is a must see. But it is so much better on the big screen. The opening sequance is the best, and the sound track is the most utterly awsome for its time.

And here is a lame one but it has its place. Roadie with Meatloaf, Alice Cooper, Blondie, and several others. A wierd but heart warming love story.

What people don't know is that Noize's everyday attire is just like Frankenfurter, so "dressing up" like that would be no fun for him. LOL

right Noize, Heavy Metal. i didn't even concider animation. I forgot all about that one, but I recommend it to anyone who's into sci-fi, fantasy, or rock n roll. And then there's my all-time favorite animated movie, Akira, if you're into the anime thing.

Ya, I forgot about Akira as well. I used to love all the Anime movies, Ralph Bakshi was my hero in those days. It seemed they all were destined for the midnight movies.

Loki, Riff Raff is my hero, I especially love him doing the intro and the TimeWarp. I remember the first time the flick was on the tube at aboutone in the morning. I let the boyz take a nap and then get up to watch the flick, they wer both doing the TimeWarp and were influanced for life by that movie.

dB, dont make me put up that picture of you in your little outfit for everyone to see. LOL

My wife and I used to sing Time Warp all the time, back when we were doing karaoke regularly (before the baby). I love that show. The only midnight showing I've seen of it, though, was sitting on the grass at the campus quad, picking chiggers out of my shorts, watching it on a rollout projecter screen about 4 feet high in the sweltering heat.... I gotta go to a real showing of that some time.... except for the brown hair, I could probably go as Riff :)

Pink Floyd- The Wall
This is Spinal Tap
Army of Darkness/Evil Dead
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (read the book too)
Reservoir Dogs
Being John Malkovich
Scarface
Pulp Fiction

i know they arent all "cult" movies, but they are all great movies.
If your a fan of Fear and Loathing, they are making a film out of another one of Hunter S. Thompson's books, The Rum Diary. I read the book and it was great.
