creating or finding white noise

I just got a new pair of moniters. I went ahead and got the Alesis 720 cause I found a good deal. They recomend using white noise to set them up, does anyone know where I can get a download or cd of white noise or how I can create it. Thanks.

cool edit pro has white noise generators.

i think a regular tv is also a source of white noise. so maybe just hook those speakers up to good ol' channel 3.

nice I think I will try the tv route. Should I just mic the tv on a static channel? I am using a korg d1200 right now so at least until spring...I won't have a cpu that can handle the truth. Thanks for your help.

I have cep2 at home, and I'll be happy to post a few seconds of white noise if you want. I'm not at home, so it'll have to be later.
If you are just getting it from the tv and don't need it, just let me know, otherwise I'll send it to your email address later. :)

they recommend white noise to set em up? that seems like an odd idea to me - why do they say that?

You know, I just did a google search for white noise samples and found this one...

ccms.ntu.edu.tw/~karchung...e%20sixteen.htm

Try that, if it doesn't do it for you, let me know and I'll email you that white noise as I mentioned before.

Flame, the white noise contains all the tones needed to ring out a room. It covers the entire spectrum of audio tone equaly so it makes a perfect noise generator for tuning your room.

Dale, if you know someone with an older analog synth, they usually have noise generator on them so they could generate a signal for you as well. If you TV has audio outputs I would use them patched into your mixer rather then the mic as it will give you a purer tone. Otherwise miccing it will do in a pinch.

I know you can use an FM radio between stations for finding critical distance in a room, but that is using a center weighted meter (speach frequencies basicly). Not sure if that is good enough for the type of calibration you are looking for. Might get you started however.

wow thanks alot guys...they rcomend the white noise to set the input level at the moniter to the appropriate level. So when you're at infinty on your baord you are also at infinity on your moniters (i think).

So far I am really impressed with the sound. Seems to have a pretty falt response. I am no professional however so I don't know if they are worth 400US a piece or not, but i was able to get them at the same price as edirol ma20d which I was going to get. Very glad I waited. I am going to put them up gainst a set of event moniters and I will let you know what I think.

I would guess at the price they should be good. I know their Moniter ones are very colored and had no lower end at all still dont from what I have heard. But I would be guessing they stepped up with the 720s. Let us know how they sound against the Events.

Well the event TR8s finally got here. One word: WOW. I don't think I have heard anything is the $500 range that sounded anywhere close to this. The Alesis doesn't even come close and is a few hundred more. The tr8 seems to me to be incredibly flat and very clear. They seem to be a little more on the warm side than the crisp side, but I haven't had any trouble getting the high fequency in the mixes to balance with what gets puton cd. Compartively the Alesis was lacking a lot of the stuff that an acoustic upright can bring about and that ended up making it a little muddy once it made it too a cd player. I have had great results with the tr8s with little adjustment period. It took a day or two to realize that I was truely hearing everything as accuretly as I was but when I realized I didn't have to compensate for speaker color too much anymore it was smooth mixin from there. BTW, I am no pro. I listen a lot and pay attention to the fine details, but that doesn't mean I know what I am talking about so take with a grain of salt. Also I mostly use an AT 3060 tube cond. on mostly acoustic inst. so that may be why they sound so warm to me.

Anyway simply put in my book tr8s are a good investment for 500.
