most cards play well with others, but to know for sure it would be best if you actually told us which cards you are talking about.

joonhol , I use 2 sound cards in my PC , a M-audo Adiophile and a sound blaster live , they seem to play well with each other , i use the M-audio one strictly for recording and the othr one is for just the normal listining to music and what ever else .But DB's right it's good to know what card(s) you have .

I know Noize uses M-Audio Delta44 and a SoundDisaster Live! MP3 and they work well together. I have an Echo Gina20 and a Philips 706 Acoustic Edge and they didn't, but the Echo and the onboard AC97 did, so as you can see, different card act different ways. Most are pretty freindly though.

Just don't try to use two cards that are the same because they will try to use the same resources and it will not work.

That is not totally true...EchoAudio soundcard can actually run multiple cards together and they work great...I think one person here has two Layla 20's (stupe, I think does) and you can run more than that. I think they say up to 32 of them, which makes me laugh, cuz I haven't seem a MoBo yet that has 32 slots :-)

Well, yes. If you are going to buy pro audio soundcards, many are designed to allow for more than one. But I don't believe that is what he had in mind. I do believe we are talking about your average inexpensive Soundblaster, tutle beach, ect.... which are not designed it. And if your gonna buy high end cards, your better off to buy one to suit your in/out needs rather than buy multiple cards.

Agreed, but the biggest card I have seen within reach of most of us is a 10 input card, and for the first tracking of a rhythm section, sometimes that isn't enough, my last recording where a whole band recorded the rhythm section took 14 tracks, as I recall, then it was a track or two at a time for the rest of the recording session.

It's that evil first take that eats 'em all up...drums (God only know how many tracks THAT can take), bass guitar (using two or three track sometimes, Rhythm guitar (using two or three sometimes) and maybe even more instruments than that.

Yes, both M-Audio and Echo card's can be used in multiple's. They work well that way because they were made to. I don't think any of the lower budget card's were built to do that.

Depending on the apps you are using, you choose which in or out you want to use in that application's preferences, or in the track assignments. For Windows in general, you set the in the "Sound and Multimedia" area of the Windows Control Panel.
