criticism...

i am starting up a website with my best friend to review arizona (mainly phoenix) local bands. i guess i need some feedback as to how to approach it. i want to be honest and to the point without being too blunt and harsh... i guess i'm expecting the worst due to a review of a live show posted by my friend on a local board, but it was done quite well. it's not like he jumped down the band's throat. he gave them his input on the good things and how to improve what was he thought was done poorly. it got very personal, probably due to maturity of some band members, it was also considered to be an accurate account of the show by others.

so i'd like everyone's input on what they'd like or wouldn't like to hear. oh, and if anyone would like to volunteer some web help (discusion boards, anyone?) give me a holler.

thanks,
el musico

You ever watch the movie "Almost Famous"? I'm in a band, and though the ideal that true criticism should be accepted, it still hurts when we get a bad review. Reporters are just the enemy to bands i think, who likes their art to be criticized? say what u wanna and be truthful, but u shouldnt expect everyone to be happy with the reviews... This is just my take on the whole subject

There is a big difference, at least in my mind, between a bad review and constructive cricitism. I have rarely been put off by good suggestions for improvement. It's just the simple "you suck" kinda comments that are totally hurtful and really very useless.

I am doing the same thing on my website and follow the military's "After Action Review" format

Describe what was intended to take place (ie concert with good monitors infront of 200 people) describe what actually occured. then describe the good things and the "things that need improvement"

I describe facts like "Though the brand new band that opened for them had 50 people only 5 stayed for the completion of this other bands set"

I've ran into one signed band that actually was a case of bad art (in my mind) and I give some of the realy awful local bands a break by just not mentioning them. but if they are over a year old and still suck then thats their problem.

basically cite facts and numbers and stay away from the "I just don't think they're maketable" type of comments.

It's a little harder becuase I current spend so much time in the christian music industry and people really think you're evil for saying bad things and are stuck in a mentality of "support everyone".

zeke, I spent a lot of time as security and body guarding for Christian artists (DC Talk, Jars of Clay, News Boys, White Heart, Stavesacre to name just a few) and you are right, they totally do the "support everybody" thing, I thing it is almost to a fault.

When you see Christian bands touring togehter only because they are friends even though their music is on two opposite ends of the music spectrum I think it is weird, I have seen some of the strangest bills in those concerts, a light-pop act opening for a totally head-banging, heavy-metal band, the only thing they have in common is their message.

Though the message is positive and good, I totally respect that, I still find it odd the partners that some of those bands find to tour with.

I haven't done any of that work for a few years now (probably 3 years or so) but it was a lot of fun when I did do it.

heh I am the worst speller in the world!

I know those concerts. A few years ago I went to a concert that was some local rock band, Every Day Life (EDL) (now broken up), and World Wide Message Tribe. with styles Hard rock, Hard Rapcore, and pop dance -respectively.

for local bands it wan't uncommon for my band (a metal dreamtheater wannabe style group now broken up) to play with a rythmic rapcore band and a Ska band in one show. Being the top three christian indies in central ohio we actually organized it so it sort of worked. We opened to "wow" everyone. . then the ska band got them moving and the rapcore group brought the most people so they closed :) to prevent people from wanting to leave. . .
