Something I have not seen much on here is critical distance. In preparing to do a large group recording, I kept running across this constraint in articles. So OK, I got a dB meter today and started measuring a few rooms for practice. WoW! A couple of rooms I have attempted recording in came down to a choice of proximity effect or reveberated mud. And I thought I was just doing something wrong. I was, not factoring in critical distance.
Just had to share this. Hope maybe it will help others if I am not the only one having a light bulb moment. That too happens from time to time. Shure www.shure.com has a procedure on measuring D' in a PDF entitled multitracking.

Dec 16, 2003 05:52 pm Thank you dB for the link! It really makes a big difference for me knowing how much space I can play with in setting a mic. And like I mentioned above, in some rooms there is no relaistic space, so I know I have to put up dampening material until I get a better Critical distance out of the room. I'm finding it is a great, easy to parctice technique. Well worth the price of the meter.
Like Noise saz, except for me it would be 100 times as I have a very difficult time focusing my listening on the room. I do much better focusing in the instrument.
