What's Up?

What's cooking in your studios this week?

I'm at work on a new song called Brittle. It's a more serious, somber song than my recent postings. I'm trying to make a decision about the style of the song... I could either go the easy route and wrap the song up in a couple of weeks, or I could make it a lot harder on myself and take a chance on blending a general sound that I'm entirely convinced will work with it. The lyrical portion is in a style that's similar to a jazzy alternative ballad, but I am considering incorporating a long instrumental bridge, similar to 70's psychedelic rock like Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, or even a little Phishy. Modern alternative ballads don't usually expound on instrumental sections like this... So I'm trying to hear it all in my head and hear whether I want to go ahead and include the long psychedelic/jazz instrumental part - which I think adds depth to the sort of trippy lyrics - or go the easy route, ABABCB, and just slap a guitar solo on after a couple of verse repetitions and call it a masterwork.... I don't know.... decisions, decisions.... I usually end up making things harder whenever I reach a decision point like this.... :) Hell, it's not like I'm writing for radio or anything

I gotta do a bassline for flame and I gotta finish (or try to finish) my video for my next application for Survivor. This will be my 4th attempt...got an inspiration for a new tune over the weekend, hoepfully that will result in something as well.

Putting together plans for recording a band I bass for. Most already know, (say this only because they may be getting tired of hearing it) 17 piece big band. This session will be dedicated to one member who has written and or arranged a good many of our pieces. We have latched on to a very sweet hall (acustic value) and are in the process of pearing down the pieces to a reasonable number for an album. Looks like we will be placing 20 mics for the session. Got my Db meter in today so I can find Critical distance in the room. Just a lot of logistics involved. The session will go down in January, but with Christmas and all I feel the need to start preparing now.

since i can't ever seem to finish a song, i think i'm going to just play around with weird chord progressions and some weird chords and rhythms. got to get more interesting rhythms.

i'm also trying to write an SF novel. and my room and life are a mess.

rearranging the studio, adding acoustic treatment, turning the loft into an instrument room of sorts.
working on a solo for a certain track on our album and doing other preproduction stuff.

my Phonics MM1705 I think I got the hang of using the group outs now, now I gotta expiriment with using the group outs and mains simultaniously. Reason i was having trouble is because (lol) group outs weren't plugged into anything

I hadn't even turned on my equipment this week until I started fooling around with a song I'd started a while back. After a while, it started coming together so I tracked what I could. I'd recorded the guitars direct (and was surprised at the sound), but I'm going to retrack them with a mic'd cab today at lunch and do the vocals tonight after work. I'm really excited about this one, I can't wait to post a link!

Are you working the weekend as well? I am on call, but hopefully Ill not get paged. And it sucks as well, I drew the short straw for both Christmass and New years for Emergency on call. This is the second year in a row. Last year it was nice though because I got to leave early...

I keep bouncing between 3 songs, and none of them are getting done, maybe this weekend one will take priority :)
