another stupid question

alright, I wanna record my vocals and monitor through headphones, but the speakers still play, is there a way to set up my board so that I don't have to unplug the speakers every time I want to monitor exclusivly through the cans? I have an idea but I don't think it would work... I was thinking I could run the outs of my phonics board to my soundcard, the outs of the soundcard to the yamaha board to power my speakers (which is what I'm doing now) and then run the headphones out the phonics and route the outs of the soundcard back into the phonics somehow... or would that cause a feedback loop?

If you were monitoring with headphones out of the phonics board, couldn't you just turn the mains all the way down on the yamaha board when you want to just use headphones?

well I'm not monitoring through the headphones on the phonics board right now, the stuff is going into the phonic board, out to the soundcard, and then into the yamaha board because it's the only way I have to power my speakers.

I think I remember how you set your stuff up. Can you turn down your mains and still get a signal to the phones on the Yamaha. I know my old one did that but it wasnt a self powered unit. Otherwise, does the Yamaha have sub channels on it. You could send the mix only to the sub channels and then assign the headphone mis to only hear the sub channels.

no sub channel, and the mains control both the signal to the speakers and to the phones

I take that back, is has a monitor 1/2 section which I assume is for going to proper studio monitors.

Yes indeed, you could use that or just send it to the aux outs and get a stereo Y cable to plug your phones into the aux outs and try that. I am not sure if there is enough signal there for the phones, but before you go buy a Y cable try pluggin the phones into one of the aux out jacks and you should get a signal to just one side of the phones. If it is sufficiant to hear then try the Y cable.

alright, so I've got the headphones going out the left monitor out, and now I can control them independantly of the mains. Now I would need to get a Y cable to connect it to where i can hear from both phones... I didn't know they made the Y cable I would need to do this though, Two Plugs, One place to plug into... only ones I've seen are with one plug that goes into two places to plug it into

(sorry for the bad vocabulary or whatever here, "plugs" and whatnot, brains not working yet)

It is a small adapter cable that will have 2 1/4" male tip and sleeve jacks on one end and the other end will be a female tip/ring/sleeve for the headphone stereo. What it does is take the left and fight independant channels and bring the to one jack for headphones. Might be alittle hard to find, but I think Radio Shack should have it.

yeah I saw one of those at a computer store but didn't have any money on me to pick it up. Least I know where to get em now. While on on this subject, if I had a headphone amp it would go out from the monitor left and rights to the ins of the headphone amp, and then the outs of the headphone amp to the headphones, correct?
