Half stacks

I have spent a long time looking at guitar amps for Christmas and I have had a difficult time deciding what to get. I want a half stack with at least 100 watts for anywhere up to $800. Right now I'm looking at the Line 6 Spider 2 150 watt half stack and the Carvin sx3142 half stack. They are both in the same price range, but I have only tried the spider 2 and the distortions are incredible, but Im a little worried about clean and vintage distortion sounds. The Carvin sounds like it would cover clean, vintage , and heavy sounds. It also has a cool tube emulating feature. Because I play all different kinds of music, this is a very difficult desision. But just because I want lots of different sounds, don't automatically think the spider2, because I am a little worried about the clean and vintage sounds. Any help would be apreciated.

Well, first tell me why the need for so much power? Are you gonna be recording with this or is this for a live show? I dont have any experience with either of the two amps mentioned, but i've tried others that I like quite a bit. As for finding "true" vintage clean and distortion sounds in the same amp that has newer heavier distortion...it's not likely to happen. Personally, after frustrating myself to no end trying to find Marshall half-stacks that had clean and distortion tones to my liking, I ended up getting an old Peavey Classic 4*10 combo amp that has an awesome clean sound and NO distortion. I simply use a series of BOSS pedals for my choice of distortion sounds. But I dont rather care for the modeling sounds of the line 6's and others like it. If thats for you, then great! Let me know what your needs are, and I can be more specific about suggestions. But the BEST suggestion anyone can give you when it comes to amps.....PLAY BEFORE YOU PAY!

I am not big on a ton of amp models and such, but the Spider 2 sounds pretty good. If I had a chance to play a carvin and I liked the sound I would definatly go with the carvin. It would be cool to have the 7 effects the spider2 has but the chorus, flange, reverb and echo that Carvin has would suit me just fine. If anyone has info. for me about Carvin amps that would be awesome.

Just browsing around the net, I checked out both amps. I like the Carvin SX 3412 a little better for myself, mainly because I've used Carvin combo amps before and I really like the sound. However, for what you're looking for, I would probably go with the Spider II. The added features such as the extra effects and tuner would be a big bonus. Especially since the amp heads are the same price. Musicians Friend will offer free shipping on this product. It has an extremely good rating, and the option to listen to a sample. Check it out.
