Whats the matter NOW!

Ok, this is yet another mixer question for the recordingly challenged. I've recently acquired (from musicians friend) a Behringer UB1202. I needed cables to hook up from my mixer to my soundcard line-in (1/8 inch stereo) on my computer. I was at a loss to find a cable that had two 1/4 inch mono to an 1/8 inch stereo in order to hook up from my main outs to the soundcard, so I instead bought a cable with RCA on one end and the 1/8th inch stereo on the other. I then hooked up from my tape out on my mixer to my soundcard. Now, when I tried to record on my software app (Cool Edit Pro 2.0), the sound recorded was EXTREMELY low and terribly distorted. Is this because of the tape out Im hooked into? The sound coming from my mic to my computer's surround speakers is awesome, but it's terrible when recording. What's the matter NOW! Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I don't know what's going on, and I don't think it would have anything to do with using the tape outs, but I can say that you could have just bought a two 1/4 inch mono to 1 1/4 inch stereo cable and then bought a 1/4 to 1/8 stereo adapter for the stereo end, which would fix that problem. That's what I did when I used to use my old sound card for recording.
There could be a lot of different things going on with the sound. I can't tell without seeing it for myself or having some more information. Sorry :(

Well, I actually tried to find a cable with two 1/4 inch mono to one 1/4 inch stereo at Radio Shack, where I spoke to the New Guy who just couldn't help me find what I needed. So, in my rush to get back home to try out my new gear :), I just got the RCA to 1/8th job. I didnt think there'd be a problem with using the tape outs, and I'm not convinced thats the problem now. The sound issuing from my mic through my computer speakers is great! However, I thought i'd leave it to the pros here at HRC to prove me right. I appreciate the reply Porpoise, and I guess I'll start the tedious process of sifting through my recording app. to find out what the problem is.

Found the problem. Apparently, Windows ME decided to reset my recording controls to Mic instead of Line. It has done similar things to me before, and I should have thought about it, but I've had it set to Line for so long that it never occured to me to check it until after exhausting myself in the Cool Edit Pro help menu. Thanx for the ideas. Later

ha - i love when it does that (not)!

just as a side note, using Yahoo chat rooms will mess your settings up something chronic...so avoid that, definately!
