Monitors

So Goldilocks goes into the 3 bear's house to master a recording...

She puts on a pair of headphones. "This sound is too tinny!" she said.

She turns on the computer speakers w/ subwoofer. "This sound is too bassy!" she said.

She goes to listen to her recording through studio monitors - whoops, there are no monitors. In a fit of depression she slumps into a corner, wildly cramming stale porridge down her gullet.

So, in other words, I need a recommendation for a CHEAP pair of monitor speakers to use when mixing/mastering/not cramming porridge down my gullet. Does anyone have any recommendations?

They don't have to be perfect, perfection is way out of my budget. The cheaper the better. Radio Hack product advice not spurned. This is for noncommercial home recordings, I just want people to hear them without me having to apologize profusely for the lousy eq job.

...and by the way, it doesn't even have to be packaged as a monitor. If I can get a near-accurate sound picture by running the sound through a boombox, that's just fine with me too.

Check out "The Gear Bag" I just added about 6 or 7 choices from Edirol, which are all reasonably priced, and perfect for someone like you. They are not perfect, but they are decent and have a decent price. I have not listened to all of Edirol's stuff, but I have listened to some and they are alright for budget speakers...

cool mon cool

If I'm going the cheap route, does it matter whether I go for monitor speakers or just somewhat better headphones? (I noticed headphones listed there...) How much would that affect the sound, generally speaking?

I use headphones to track vocals but I don't like mixing witht hem basicly because i haven't learned how yet. I can't make up for the lack of a sweet spot yet. It's all preferance and learning your gear though, you can have the crappiest speakers (like the two 10" PA speaker I use) and get decent sounds by learning them, or you can have some 4000 studio monitors and get crappy sounds by not knowing your speakers.

the whole point of mixing is getting all your tracks leveled and panned rightwhere you want them, and that's hard to do on headphones when your panarama is exagerrated and you can't accurately tell which tracks stand out. You can experiment with this yourself by taking a quiet sound and a loud sound and mixing them as-is and you won't hear the quiet one on regular speakers but you'll hear it clearly on headphones.

lately i've been getting my levels right in my (y'all gonna kill me) my home stereo i have here in my bedroom/studio. sur ethey sound crappy, but like Loki's saying, I know exaclty *how* crappy they should sound.

BTW I've got my eyes on those M-Audio monitors, a pair of the the 8" ones. I've got some other stuff by them I'm pleased with, including a soundcard, a midi to usb box and some preamps

I never said that...even if I did, my opinion is not the be-all-end-all-statement-of-fact anyway...tho it should be :-)

I do recall someone not liking the M-Audio monitors, but I can't remember who or why...

there's 3 or 4 models out. some have 5" drivers, some have 8" drivers. I mostly hear the negative reviews on the 5" ones, and they mostly only say that there's not enough low end response.

On another note I was hangin with some guys in Frederick a few weeks ago and this guy had a pair of KRK V8's that just sounded awesome! I found the sweet spot between them and just stood there in awe while he played back some of his projects for us.

Lost for words with all to say.

Yeah, I'm looking at the 8" ones too and so close to getting them this week. I would like to know who said that they didn't like it and why. Hate to spend $400 and not like the bass quality in them.

There are some great monitors being made these days, but I just can't pry myself away from my ol' JBL 4206's...

dB- sorry man, thought it was you who didn't like the sound of those monitors. And I know it's not the end all be all, i was just stating that if you didn't like em jamie could talk to you about why :) I haven't heard em yet... but I like m-audio so I doubt i wouldn't like em... specially since the only thing i can compare em to are my pa speakers
