Hello everyone. This is my first post and I thought I'd start off my time here saying hello to everyone and asking a question that requires a fairly lengthy reply. I am very interested in starting my own home recording studio...however I have a 3000-4000 dollar budget... I have NOTHING so far. could anyone recommend a set up for me? maybe one that you use yourself or one that you have checked into? Keep in mind...I dont want any fancy extra gear that isnt necisarry, only the bare essentials at first. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I can't wait to get involved in the site. I'm all about some message boards!

Hi

Okay, rather brief reply as it's late here, but here is my setup.

PC for recording (2Ghz+ with 80Gb+ HDD and 256Mb+ Ram)

M-Audio Delta 44 Soundcard

Small 4-8 channel Behringer Mixing Desk for Monitoring

High Quality Preamp (mono or stereo, depending on your needs - I reccomend Focusrite a lot!) - I use a Focusrite VoiceMaster Platinum

Some form of active monitoring - I use Tannoy Reveal Actives.

Some form of Computer Multi-Tracking / Sequencing software, I use Cubase SX.

A high quality condensor mic, I use a Rode NT-1 and a Sure SM57 (becuase they have SO many uses)

That's pretty much my "core" equipemnt that I use for recording, sorry for not going into massive amounts of detial, but it should get you thinking. This setup revolves around recording 1 or 2 signals at once and using high quality equipment throughout - this will ensure that what you record will be of "semi-pro" to "pro" quality, it will also allow you to easily expand your setup in the future.

Regards
jues.

well, i could give you a few set ups, according on how many channels you would need and how many tracks you would want to record at a time. If you are going to do live recording (drums, guitars, bass, and vocals) you may need more than the delta 44. if not, the delta 44 can record up to 4 tracks at a time. give me some details on what style of music and how you want to record.

thanks
jason

The FAQ section, provided mostly by our long-time member "collapse" has a lot of good info in it for the complete newbie.

semi folk acoustic music...as of now I am solo with my acoustic. However, I would like the option of recording many instruments at the same time for purposes of gathering friends to play with me. 4 tracks at a time would probably do well for me. Thanks for the info as well guys. I'll check out the FAQ now. If you want to hear my music to determine for yourselves what i might need... go to mattmusic.us and click on my music. then select one of my songs and it should play.
