Hay I was wondering could somebody help me out to figure whats the least amount of gear I need here? Im trying to record just vocals through a mic and preamp and then put it into my computer to mix it on top of an instumental track in pro tools LE. My question is: can I just record the vocals through the mic preamp and then in the computer soundcard and mix it with the instrumental in the computer program, OR Is the mixing process and matching up the vocals with the instrumental going to require a 4 track recorder? Remember I already have the instumental track in my computer from a cd and in my editing program. Thanks alooooooot for help.

Okay. But, is it easier to sync up the vocals with a 4 track recorder or something?

Dear Mr Fat (if that is your real name) - you seem to be looking at this in a very complicated fashion. Imagine, if you will, the actual process.

Set up your Microphone and Preamp. Hook the output from the preamp into the input of your soundcard.

In ProTools LE, open up the track with the instrumental in and create a new "lane" for the vocals - set the recording inputs for that lane accordingly.

Attach the output from your soundcard into a small mixer / headphone preamp and give your vocalist a pair of headphones to monitor the track on.

Press play and record at the begining of the track.

and bobs your fathers mother? mmkay hehe.

So what if you dont have a mixer and just listen to a cd player and headphones to sing it in time? Is it pretty easy to lay that track in time with the instrumental later in pro tools?

It's in your best interest to get the music tracks down first, THEN lay the vocals on.

In my opinion.

So I dont need a mixer to sync up the vocals and instrumentals, I can just do it in Pro Tools?

no you don't NEED a mixer, though it is reccomended. All you need to start with really is a decent soundcard, some way to monitor, mic pre, mic, and software...

Hey, FattyFatFat, I love the name :) Almost beats PorpoiseMuffins...

First you have the instrument track recorded onto ProTools. Then you play it back and sing on top of it. Simple as that. You just need the equipment mentioned before if you don't have it.

you'll still need a preamp. unless you plan to use the inadequate mic input on a cheap gaming card?

not recommended. concidered a small mixer. kill like 4 birds with one stone
