A little bit of Help Please

Hey Guys,

Many of you on this forum are a wealth of music information and so I was hoping to tap some information from you.

I am researching a project on Promotion throughout music history and I was wondering if you could recall any bands that I should look into for it.

I am particularly after bands that because huge via promotion (marketing, publicity stunts, etc, etc) I have no problem with modern day rock bands, but going back a bit - all I can think of are the Beatles and how they were marketed, and what happened with the Sex Pistols in the 1980's - and that leaves a rather large gap :)

Any pointers or avenues of research would be amazing - thanks guys

As far as Bands during the 60's & 70's there wasn't really a whole lot in the way of promotion/marketing at least on a large scale. Some you might want to look into though that were more a result of promotion, for the 60's/70's would be The Monkee's, The Partridge Family, The Cowsill's.

The Rolling Stones would definitly be one to look into. As they were marketed somewhat as anti-beatles the "bad boys" of rock & roll.

The Who, because of there rock opera gained alot more promotion and exposure than they did earier in there career though they were a popular group in the 60's, they were much "bigger" after that.

There just wasn't the kind of promotion you see today though and with the advent of MTV (definitly research MTV) in 80's. For most prior to that, it was get your record on the air and you either sank or floated so thats where the majority of promotion was, something the fans never really saw. Also check out Bill Graham for info on different bands to research, probably the biggest promoter around thru the 60's & 70's.

hope that helps.

i think internet promotion would be an interesting avenue to look into, especially now that more and more companies are getting into that to combat the file swapping phenomonen...

for example, indie band mogwai released one of their albums on the net after their record company didnt like it, and dropped them. they got 300,000 downloads of the songs, and the record company signed them again, essentialy paying for the same record twice!

not bad. i wanna my songs out on a website and aim to hit a few thousand listens...dunno how many yet though...record companies dont argue with figures, it seems!

Promotional successes? One word KISS.

Modern music (or semi modern seems to be scandle driven rather than legitimate promotion, very similar to politics) Success is created for people by the same folks that try to stop it. OzzFest a couple years back was picketed and protested by people because Marilyn Manson was part of it. Ironically (but still pridictably) would up being the best promotion the tour could have hoped for. It got them free promotion on the news, newspapers, letters to the editor and more. Same goes for Jim Morrison stripping on stage, Ozzy's bat biting incident, Don Henley with teenagers backstage...oh how the list goes on...

it seems to me that nearly all of todays radio and mtv bands and acts are a result of publicity and marketing. its like marketing departments single handedly decide what will sell next. they decide they like something (usually something terrible and unoriginal), and then it does sell because they create the market for it through mass marketing (mtv and radio stations that play the same songs over and over). i know marketing has always played a role, but today it seems to control what we will hear 100 times a day. i know im a bit pessimistic but i believe this is true.

Who you calling a queen, punk? :-) hehehe

From my memory Queen never got any popularity by "marketing" but more by theatrical stage shows and off stage media like Freddie outed as gay (not common back then) and things like that.

Rap artists do good to get arrested. Seems like every gangsta rapper needs to get caught with an unloaded firearm or a silly possesion CDS charge to sell a record. Guess it helps that "bad boy" image like the Stones? Marilyn Manson is a good point to bring up, dB. Kinda like Ozzy or Alice Cooper, every little negative thing that's ever been said about the guy has only helped him sell. Wether it was some silly connection to Columbine High or the rumor about him having a rib removed for personal reasons, it only helps to sell, becuase if the parents hate him the kids will buy it.

soundscan scams go beyond defjam, but they're not being reported yet, if they ever will.

There was a British Band called Zigue-Zigue Sputnik who were a triumph of marketing. As i recall they were a manufactured band with ridiculous haircuts (and this in a decade dominated by dodgy hair-do's.

I recall a totall media blitz at the time - these guys were 'the next big thing', but there was a media back lash and they sank after the first single made the charts.

I did a search on google for them and came up with very little - strange indeed, like they have been wiped from history.

Another triumph of marketing over substabce is of course the career of Madonna, who went from a less than average weak pop singer to international superstar, with barely a recording of worth on the way.

There has always been a lot of concentration on permotion. Biography the Tele channel is a great place to pick up on a lot of that. Going back to the "Rat Pack" and it's carefully crafted and marked "sexy bad boy, but not too bad". Bob Dylan was quite an image creater. The who poping over the top by smashing guitars. Nancy Sinatra's leggs. Coltrain "creates" a new sound not yet labeled rock with "Night Train". In many cases the further back you go the more sofisticated the actual marketing. Especially in comparison to say Modana or Bipsy (forget her name sorry she is on another thread, big news she had sex). Big brests, lot of skin, has some sex, win! Not real detailed. A lot more money thrown into it to ensure you can't escape her brests where ever you look, but not real sophiscated. It has kinda moved from "a new experience that will interest people" to "stunts" to "in the face ad-nausiam" over the years. MHO.

- Big breasts in my face ad nauseum doesn't really bother me for some reason, I can handle them ;-)

"queen recorded the first ever music video (bohemian rhapsody) and it's sigue sige sputnik, no zed's."
- Which explains why i couldn't find them in search engines!
