Got a new (to me) bass

So, my loved six string bass was just too darn hard on my back...deteriorating lumbar disc, hyrhiating higher disc and such...just getting old...so I put it up on Craigslist for sale or trade...a dude wants to trade his 5 string, so we meet, plunk around a bit on each other basses and I say nothing, he says "if you want to do the trade, I am up for it, totally" (of course, it took him a minute or two to say it, speaks very slow from what I suspect is a long career of drug use or something). So I agree and we leave.

Within hours he texts me telling me how good my bass plays and sounds, but he "misses his old bass" and wants to trade back...I tell him I will put his through the paces that night and get back to him.

That night I play for a couple hours, lay down a couple tracks on some songs I am working on and love it. The next day I tell him we made the deal, he agreed, and actually instigated the trade, and I am keeping it.

He starts getting pissed, calls me names, wants to fight me in a "winner takes all" fight for the basses and all that, in text messages over the course of hours.

I just told him to put on his big boy pants, he's a grown man, made a trade, so suck it up...and mentioned I am a mixed martial artist with a permit to carry, so, don't pick fights with people you don't know...he continues being a douchebag and I just start ignoring his texts...

In the end, it's been a few days with no word, I have a great bass (and so does he!) it was a very fair trade value and quality wise, if anything, he walked away with the more valuable bass, but the one I got doesn't hurt my back after an hour of standing...and it records well, plays well and sounds great.

Just a frustrating experience. If he would have opened with something being wrong with the bass I gave him, I'd have manned up and righted the wrong, but there is not, totally fair trade made by two grown men responsible for their own actions...suck it up, butter cup.

I was watching a gear rundown video of John Myung and Music Man created a 6 sting bass that uses a thinner 5 string neck.

At the time of the video they weren't being produced for the public (but may be now?), and I don't know how much less weight it would be. I assume not a lot, but Music Man makes good guitars as you know, so if you want to get back into 6 string you may want to look into it and see if you can find out what it is. I think it was just a modified Bongo at the time.

I'd look up the video but I'm at work. Youtube John Myung gear rundown.

Thanks for the info, I may look in to that. Funnily, this 5 string I got isn't really much lighter, but, for some reason, is easier on my back, so it must be more body and neck size giving me problems.

Over all, I don't think I use that sixth string enough to make a switch back...it did, admittedly, come in really handy once in a while, but not that often.

Sorry to laugh, but I was amused by your story.

No worries, it is kinda funny...in hindsight.

This part is especially funny to me. Who says something like that? Ha ha.

Wow, some people. Kinda reminds me of a certain blowhard who tried to have a "throw down" here on the forum once, hah!

Still, hope nothing bad comes of it all. Some people can get a bit crazy. :P

If it was me, and he was really wanting it back that much, I would have been, "you know, give it a week, and if you still really want it, I'll consider it." Though, the near-douchebaggery on his part kinda throws that out the window, heh.

In truth, he almost had me ready to give it back, cuz I felt bad he's so stupid (ya'll should have met this dude), classic "Jeff Spicolli" if there ever was one...and as someone that has benefited from second chances, I figured it'd be the right thing to do, karma and all that...but then he started getting threatening and really mean, so I figured it better for him to learn a lesson.

I did, while he was freaking out over texting, snoop around and find his address, business address, criminal record and such just so I knew in case he got too crazy...
