Rack mount computer cases??!!?

Hello all, it's been a while!

I recently enrolled in a Masters course on BerkleeMusic.com and I'm trying to get my home studio up to snuff, cost conscious mind you, while allowing myself to make it portable in the future. The reason for this is that I would like to try to make my schooling to pay for itself as much as I can. I.E. Recording live venues and enabling artists to sell CDs of the performance after the show.

I would like to be able to record live gigs with my DAW and the only way I see that happening in most cases is to make it rack mountable, along with my hardware.

This will give me the flexibility of portability, yet presents some real challenges in finding the right one.

I've been searching for a while now, and while I've found a few contenders, none of them are anywhere near my price range given that the case must support a dual purpose; both in home DAW and live venue DAW.

My main concerns are that the in home side of things must be quiet. My live venue concerns come from shock, not so sturdy stages, and moving the unit in general.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good in between for this type of usage.

Budget is from 160$ to 300$ which I figured would be a reasonable figure.

Thanks for your consideration guys!

How big of a case are you talking about? Laptop/desktop? Computer monitors? What kind of music hardware will you have with you?

I know this isn't a rack mount solution, but have you considered something like the Tascam 2488NEO? I use one in my home studio just because it's so easy to use. It has great mic pre-amps, you can record 8 tracks simultaneously, and it's a hands on mixer. I paid about $800 for mine but I see them on eBay for $200 - $400. Just a thought for you... :)

I have a 3u ATX style rack mount case I am selling right now...3 drive bays, a couple hard drive bays...The power supply is small, would need to replace it otherwise, it's great.

Jovhato- right now I'm looking for a 4U ATX

BK- Looks good on paper, but I'm a little too hands on units like that. I'm kind of an in the box type of person. But definitely something to think about to help broaden myself!

Deebs- sounds good, but I want a 4U so I can install a 1000 Watt modular PSU and maybe a full size GPU later on down the line.

I'm not sure it'll work in a 3U. Haven't looked that far into it yet. but from what I can tell so far, alot of the rack computer cases have the PSU in odd spots in relation to the other components and lack the clearance for non-low profile GPUs.

I guess I'm trying to build a god machine on a budget.

I'm out of my depth, but learning to swim as I tread water!
