question about room dimentions

Hello, my name is Matt, I am brand new to the forum. I am planning on renovating my basement to make a recording studio. The ceilings are 8 foot, my question is whether it is worth the money and time to renovate and set up a studio in a space with ceilings this low.

The room dimentions would be approx 18 x 12 with the 8 foot ceiling. I am confident that good sounds could be acheived with the right acoustic treatments and equipement. I play drums and would be using the room for recording full rock bands mainly. Im hoping someone may have experience in a similar situation, thanks.

I don't think too many of us have large rooms for our studios. Mine is set up in my basement and is a shared space. I also have 8 foot ceilings. One of the things a small room does is bounce back the sound quicker than a large room. Now you can invest a bunch of money in sound deadening materials too try to make the room more neutral or you can learn what the characturistics of the room and work with them. All I did was install an accoustic ceiling so that the sound wouldn't bounce around in the floor joist so much. But to answer your question simply, I think an 18x12x8 foot room is a fine space to dedicate to a studio.

There is a real good book titled " Sound Recording Advice" that you can get from Amazon for $20 plus shipping. It's well worth the money

Jamie is right though. I use the bathroom, the garage, the kitchen, every room in the house. You can figure out the sound of the room and go from there. The room you have and the 8 foot ceilings are just fine. Tune the room to your liking and go from there. I use a 100 foot multi channel snake to get wherever I have to go in the house and use differant rooms for differant sounds. It works just fine.
