DVD ROM TROUBLE!!! HELP!!!!

my dad got sp3 for windows xp pro and frm what i understand, that was the begining of my problem... i know that xp doesnt come with a built in dvd codec (the stores put em in before u buy their computer). when i got sp3 on here, it didnt transfer the old dvd codec.. ive tried downloading all kinds of codecs and programs with codecs in them (powerDVD, winDVD, winAVI, VLC, CCC, everything). still, my drive only picks up CD and says nothing about DVD except in the properties it will read that the drive is full. i even went online and found people that love toying with the registry (which i have done before and completely understand how careful you have to be) and deleted the filters that respond to the players. the problem is still the same as if i hadnt done a thing.... my question; does anyone know how to get my 'sony crx320e' to work properly? its like everything i download for a codec doesnt line up with WMP, but not only that, none of these programs i downloaded can read the DVD either! the drive is not 'dead' theres just some screw up somewhere. i think its in the hardware driver, but im not an expert.. although i have tries going to sony's site and finding an updated driver, i cant find one... i guess the driver is part of windows and not the device... anyone understand me??? let me know if you have any other questions. ive gone through everything i can think of to get this fixed, so im sure i have some kind of response lol.

From what I have read, there is a firmware upgrade for that player, go to Sony Support and look for said firmware updates.
