What are they? Is a hardware or software maximizer any better than the other? Are they needed in mastering?

May 19, 2003 06:45 pm They are hardware or software, they are kinda hard to explain, sort of a glorified compressor...they take the signal and squash down the peaks, when used correctly they are practically inaudible, and raise the whole rest of the signal accordingly...done properly it can add a few db to your final product...Waves Native Power Pack comes with the L1, which is pretty nice.

May 19, 2003 07:20 pm i thought that sonic maximizers had to do with the phase of the frequencies relative to speakers in particular, in that the bass frequencies (which apparently are normally delayed a slight bit) are brought back "into phase" in a cookie-cutter fashion, making the sound clearer.
i heard good things about waves using that...it's phase EQ, right?

May 20, 2003 07:04 pm Yes, that is what the Lo-contour of the maximizer does. That and the definition control is how they bring life back into the audio, it all begins as compression though. And the L1 does a simelar job, only without the contour controls that the BBE has. I own 2 of their older models, a 422A and a 822A. I use them mostly for breathing life into old vinyl as I record it into the PC, then it is easier to work with and restore the audio from there. It also works great on tape, and for reviving mp3 audio into full audio spectrum again.
