I recorded this ironically drug free "stoner rock" group Saturday. I bounced "Death of Adam" and played it back with queue's added for the video on the same day. This video had a much higher budget than the last one I posted here (Sony f3+other equipment I don't know anything about). Director says it'll take about 2 months to finish editing, but I'll post a link when it's done. The song "Death of Adam" sounds like it's inspired by Harold Camping but I didn't ask.

Both tracks from the session are in my profile. I think the cymbals are too hot, but the drummer was beating them mercilessly and I didn't have enough inputs to mic the toms individually (just overheads). I tried cutting a few db from everything above 6k using a gentle log curve but it just sounds muddy when I do that. maybe I need an MBC for this job?

Any critiques are appreciated!

The only thing that sticks out to me that needs a bit of tweaking is the vocals. They don't cut through much. Maybe boost some high mids and compress a little.

the kick sounds a touch bassy where the bass guitar sits to my ears.

Cymbals sound ok to me.
Try a slow attack comp maybe 30ms-ish on the O/H's for shits and giggles, with a 50 to 70ms release at about 2:5. Threshold i guess is up to you.

I've got a tee-tiny bit of parallel compression on the drum bus right now that in retrospect I don't really like as is, I'll try the compression you mentioned.

Also think the bass needs to come down a bit in volume and the kick needs a sub boost. I hear you on the vocals too, I'm not done deciding how I want it to sound. I want it to be extreme and effected but clear. Thinking about layering a few filtered variations in there, like a narrow mid filter with some verb or something.

Not happy with Death of Adam yet. White Cloud came out a lot better I think, I'll probably bounce that one and use it as a reference to get the Death of Adam mix closer to the White cloud mix. Wish I had a nice tape machine for those guitar tones, even the little 4 track recorder they used to track the rehearsal demo they sent to me has a gritty bite I just can't replicate digitally.

I'm really happy with the vocal reverb on White cloud, ambient reverb->hall-style reverb->spring reverb. Won't work on Death of Adam though, need something else uniquely interesting.
