Do you need to use a DI box or amp when using FX pedals?

Recording an accoustic guitar duo tomorrow and one of the artists mentioned that he has an input jack on his guitar and plans on using FX pedals. Do I need anything besides cables to run that to the board? Thanks.

In my mind it would depend on what FX he is running...if not micing a cabinet, you'd at least want some sort of speaker/mic/room modeling or simulation of some sort to add some spacial qualities to the sound or it may record as a very sterile, icky sound.
