Is there a way around getting synth sounds on a pc -rather than buying a synth?

Yeah, what wyd said.

If you have an old / cheap casio keyboard, then you probably already have a midi controller. You just need to run a program on your PC that creates the sounds, driven by the controller.

Oatmeal is a good free synth. Lots of people seem to use it.

Yep there's a buncha synths out there that are freebies and very good quality. Here's a (smallish) selection to get started. Almost all of them can be found on KVR Audio.

Commonly:

iloSynth1
Synth 1 from Ichiro Toda (based on the Nord Lead engine)
Oatmeal
TAL Noisemaker, Bassline, Elec7ro I and II
Jamstix 3 (drummer AI program)

The freebies from IK Multimedia, SampleTank, and EastWest.

Also have Proteus X from back when I bought my Xboard 61 keyboard, but I don't use it so much these days. E-MU does have it up for free though as well. The sounds are nothing special though.

Any of the GTG Synths are good. Get 'em here: www.gtgsynths.com/plugins.htm

I also use on occasion:
iblit, PolyIblit, and ersdrums for electronic drum sounds.

Some of the synths from UGO: String Theory 1.5, Rez v2.0, Motion, Texture, etc.

AlgoMusic String Synth

Angelina (now free for synth-choir sounds)
Revitar (physical model guitar sounds, also now free)

and several other misc. synths much less frequently, but they're there just in case heh. Too many to list here though. On top of that I've also got a buncha effects I use. I'm fond of Bootsy's plugins at varietyofsound.wordpress.com/

I also use Kjaerus's Classic Series effects.
www.acoustica.com/plugins/vst-directx.htm
Unfortunately, their main website seems to be gone now.

AcmeBarGig has a buncha cool effects and guitar amp sims.

Fretted Synth has some good synths and guitar effects (Freeamp 2.5 and 3 are fun to mess with)

GreenMachine is also a great (and powerful) little guitar amp sim.

That should be good to get you (or anyone really) started. xD
