Hey everyone!

I've been playing guitar for a number of years and have started my love affair with home recording. After getting hold of a POD UX2 audio interface and having a proper session with it I've recorded my first track with the view to eventually recording an instrumental EP. Its kiiinda Explosions In The Sky style but.....different.

I reckon this forum will prove to be loads of help, so if you have a spare minute it would be epic if you could give it a listen and point me in the direction of where to go from here - any standout faults and your thoughts of the music in general.

Cheers for having a read through my ramblings!

That's a cool sound. What is it?

There's nothing wrong with this recording but the sound/guitar/effect is all alone. Record/program some percussive elements, write some melodic lines to complement this, sing/vocalize, etc. As it is it's just a piece of something that should be bigger. When there's a mix to critique, then we can make some suggestions...but you have succeeded in making a very neat sound!

I really like where you're headed with it; I also have hours of material with fantastic emotional beginnings/endings/transition pieces and then creativity runs dry for whatever reason. Don't get complacent and keep on writing until the song's done, if you can. If you can't, keep this recording and look at it 6 months from now. Eventually you'll find a song for it even if you can't write one right off the bat.

I'll paraphrase a quote I read that allegedly came from Neil Young; don't rush to write songs to fill your album, take the time to write songs that endure the test of time. The need to rush will go away entirely.

I guess I shouldn't even call that a Neil Young quote...its more my personal stance, loosely inspired by a Neil Young quote I read and don't remember, ha. Since you posted this guitar/effect without anything else for context, I imagine you're pretty confident in it and you really like the way it sounds; I do too. Don't rush to place it, put it in a song that "needs" it.

Wise words man.

Everything you hear is guitar, using a combination of my pedal's delay and also the echo and delay settings I've made in POD Farm. Took me ages to get a tone I was happy with and can't think of too many people with the same sound.

Will need to get some extra elements in there and do some more writing. I think this needs a lot of build up and you're right I definitely think some percussion would help.

Which leads me to my next question, what are your experiences/recommendations for programming percussion? Some friends swear by superior 2.0 but I've never used it. Any other thoughts?

Will begin work on this once I've got some proper monitors, I'm currently using cheap *** logitech speakers which have waaay too much bass, and a pair of headphones, so it's taking me forever to trust the sound of my mix. Will have a look on here for some more information on them.

Cheers,

Harper

I don't have many experiences programming percussion...I'm trying to figure it out myself right now, and I use PT so my experience wouldn't help you much.

Concerning monitors, are you limited by space? If so, maybe headphones would be a better solution. I love my AT M-50's. I also have AT M-20's. The M-50's are superior in every way. M-50's are going to make the low end a little more prominent than it "should" be, so mix accordingly and check the mix on a system your target audience will most likely use to listen to your material. If that's an Mp3 player, buy some mid-priced consumer earbuds and test it from an Ipod; if the audience is likely to listen to a CD in a car, try it in a car stereo. If space isn't an issue and money is burning holes in your pockets, I'd buy some Mackie HR824's!
