External effecys with Boss BR1600

I have a Boss BR1600 which I'm very happy with as it allows me the flexibility I need to record my own songs.I have also recorded my bands' demo's on it with great results. However, although I'm very happy with the internal effects, I would also from time to time like to use my Boss SE50 on some vocals. The only thing is there is no provision (from what I can see) to use a 'send and return' feature. Is there any other way I can connect a mic to the unit via the SE50 and if I did, can I still use phantom power by plugging the mic directly into the SE50 and taking a cable out of the SE50 and into the XLR on the BR1600?
Any advice would be great, thanks in advance.

Hey AndyJ.

Most units out there will not pass phantom power between units. There are several op amps in line with the inputs and outputs. And will not pass power through them.

I can't say that I know the two units that you have listed here. I have tried to look them up, and I'm not having much luck in finding information on how they pass signal. I'll keep looking for you. But just from knowing how audio devices work, I can tell you that unless it has a connector marked as phantom pass though, it won't.

The only thing that would work is a dynamic mic. Then phantom power is a non issue.

One work around, if u still want to use ur phantom powered gear, is to record it first clean and dry and then run it through ur effects unit and route it back into another track.

Thanks very much for your replies. Rob, I did wonder if plugging the mic into an effects unit and out again would 'disable' the phantom power. I do have a dynamic mic so will have to try using that.
Crux, you solution sounds like a good way to try it, but how could I route the recorded track through the effect unit and back into another track? The BR1600 doesn't seem to have anything like a send/return socket, is there anyway you might know of I could 'cheat' so it works? lol
Thanks again for your replies.

Im not 100% familiar with the unit, but every system has to have some kidn of out doesnt it? Even if its a monitor our, should be able to go to an effect unit, probably have someone about whether it would be considered line level or so

but if it just has direct outs from the track or well any standard out, u should be able to feed that to the effects and from the effects into another vacant track

Uh, at least one more time . . .

As far as your original post goes: Get a cheap (or whatever yo can afford!) outboard mic pre, like the infamous ART Tube MP, and plug your condenser mic into that, and then send the MP's out to the SE50. Yeah, you can't "route" phantom power through other devices (at least in most cases)--you'll wind up shorting something out, probably the SE 50.
Or, for "post" work, if you have an extra track available on the 1600, mute all the tracks that you've recorded except for the vocal, send it out to the SE 50, process it, and then send it back in to the spare track. I have an old BR-532, which of course has no send/returns, and I've done the former above; I don't see why you can't do the latter.
