Kinda directed toward Dan, but anyone can chime in if they want.
Not sure how I can make this happen, but after adding the rss feeds for KVR audio and HRC to my site bytemixsound.net, (and the way the site is arranged now) I thought it would be cool to add some kinda video feed up in the big space next to the login.
Question is what kinda feed? I was thinking of something like videos of demos of products, but that smacks too much of marketing or free-advertising for those products to me...and I don't want to get into a tangle on that crap.
So, still thinking on videos and rss...I was thinking what about feeds from Musikmesse or NAMM? Wonder if they even have any rss video feeds.... Or maybe feeds from tutorial-like resources or how-to's I mean, the purpose of bytemixsound is not only to (eventually) provide a service to bands seeking recording and mixing services, but also to serve as a resource for our fellow home musicians and people wanting to learn the field.
The other thought was if I had a few different video feeds, it might be a good idea to put them into a rotating block, or a random block. I know Drupal is capable, and we (webgeeksforhire) have an e-commerce site that uses a random block to shift product images around on page loads. I can't remember how we did it though....I know we create the random block holder, and then fill the holder with content that gets shifted. But I don't remember the framework behind it...that is...if we did a custom job, or if we used a random block module in conjunction with imageview or views or something.
Ah, possibliities.
Anyway, rambles aside the concept is this:
Have a block that displays a single video from another source, be it rss or some other feed that can update as a news item. Have that block be able to shift between different videos in different categories. The shift would happen at the time the page is loaded. (meaning I'd probably have to somehow disable cacheing for that page for it to update properly)
I'm mostly thinking out loud here, and I may have to go diving into drupal.org and see if I can pick out anything useful.
EDIT: Hmm, looks like there's a way to create a node that embeds a video, but it involves Drupal's Feed API module, Feed Element Mapper, CCK and the Embedded Media Field...probably not so light-weight modules....I know CCK is fairly extensive. But I don't think that method can be used as a block >_< Guess I'll keep hunting around.
